Lycoris replied,

I-I am sorry, Alex. Ryan just didn't want the powers to be used for evil purposes. That captain is such a bad man and if-if he got the powers, who knows what he might do?

She paused then quickly replied,

But I-I promise you that we'll save you. We'll get you back. Even if I had to sacrifice myself, I will get you back to safety, Alex.

Although Alex wanted to tell Lycoris not to do such a thing, he knew that the shapeshifter would immediately suspect him.  However, he had to think of something and so replied,

I don't want to force you to do anything against your will, Lycoris.  I'm ok where I am and as long as Nerine is safe, it doesn't really matter what happens to me.

Lycoris replied,

No, I won't abandon you. I promise that I won't ever abandon you. If this is what I have to do, I will do it. I-I know how much you mean to Nerine and I want you two back together safe again soon. And-and you mean a lot to me. I won't abandon you, Alex. Just hang in there, please.

Alex felt the tears form in his eyes although they hadn't spilled yet.  It touched his heart to hear how much Lycoris cared for him still.  He replied,

Lycoris, I'm sorry that you're in this situation.  And I'm sorry for everything.  I know it's too late to say this but I want you to know that I never wanted to leave you.  I just didn't have a choice in the matter.

Lycoris felt her own eyes moist with tears as she heard Alex's answer and remembered their divorce. But she wasn't angry at him. She could never get angry at him or blame him. She replied,

I-I know, Alex. You don't need to apologize. I-I never blamed you, and I understand that you had to do what you do. This is the right thing. Just, please know that no matter what, you'll always have a special place in my heart, ok? Don't ever forget that.

Indeed, for even though Lycoris was in love with Ryan now, she could never forget her love for Alex or have him become any less special for her.

Alex smiled softly and a tear shed down his cheek.  He took a moment to compose himself and then replied,

And you'll always have a special place in mine.  You'll always be a part of me and nothing can ever change that.

Lycoris smiled a bit to herself as well and replied,

You too, Alex. You too.

She paused then taking a deep breath, she continued,

Hang in there. I'll find a way to get you back as soon as possible. And-and I'll try to check on you again, if I could.

Alex replied,

Don't worry about me.  I'll be ok but I would be happy to hear from you again if possible.


Meanwhile, Ryan waited for a signal from Lycoris when she was done with her conversation with Alex so that he could shut off the telepathy.

Lycoris replied,

I'll do my best. Please take care of yourself, Alex.

She then squeezed Ryan's hand gently, signaling for him that she was all done.

Ryan felt Lycoris squeeze his hand and nodding, he quickly communicated with Alex that everything would be done to get him back safely soon.  He then made contact with the shapeshifter and said,

Ok, we're done and...thank you for allowing Alex to communicate back.

The shapeshifter raised an eyebrow as Ryan thanked her and replied,

You're welcome, but I hope you'll put some sense into that head of yours soon. I may be keeping your friend safe and sound so far but don't expect me to keep doing so for long. If his presence is useless here, if you aren't planning to hand over the girl, I might as well kill him once and for all, as a little punishment for you all.

Ryan frowned and replied,

We'll see about that.


Without saying anything more, he shut off the telepathy and turning to Lycoris, he did his best to sound cheerful and said,

"Well, at least we know Alex is ok now."

Lycoris smiled a bit and although she was relieved that Alex was alright, talking to him shook something within her, and she wished she could do anything to get him back. Without saying anything, her tears flowed down her cheeks and she sobbed sadly.

Meanwhile, the shapeshifter groaned as Ryan shut off the telepathy, and then turning to Alex, she couldn't help but ask,

"Are you ok?

Ryan was worried as Lycoris cried and instinctively wrapping his arms around her, he gently said,

"That must have been difficult, I know.  But you know that he's safe and I promise we'll do everything to get him back."

The tears slid down Alex's cheeks although he made no attempt to wipe them away.  Nodding, he put on a brave smile and quietly replied,

"Yeah, I'm ok."

Lycoris didn't hold back and letting herself cry in Ryan's arms, she murmured between her sobs,

"We'll get back soon, right? We have to do everything we can, everything...I-I don't care if I have to sacrifice myself, Ryan. Alex-Alex has to return."

The shapeshifter had to admit to herself that she felt sorry for Alex as she witnessed his tears. But keeping her tone as usual, she replied,

"Why did you divorce and leave her if you still love her so?"

Ryan gently rubbed Lycoris' back and softly replied, "Of course we will and we'll do without sacrificing you.  There must be a way.  We'll think of something, ok?"

Alex sighed sadly and quietly replied, "I guess I can tell you.  There's no harm in it."

He then told the shapeshifter everything from how he had first met Nerine and then Lycoris all the way up to where Nerine confronted him about getting a divorce and he felt that he had no option but to grant her wish.
