Chapter 61

As Max came to, waking up after being knocked out from the duel, his vision cleared, and he could see that almost everyone else was waking up. However, he noticed that Alex and Hades were missing from the scene, and of course, Max was immediately worried.

Kaiba woke up as well and looked around. He, too, noticed that Alex was gone and shouted,

“Where is she?!”

Joey came to and replied in an annoyed voice, “Not so loud, moneybags.”

Yugi looked around as well and asked, “Where is Alex and that guy?”

Max shook his head, forcing himself to fully wake up, and he said,

“I don’t know, but I’ll try to find out.”

He took out his communication device from his pocket and attempted to communicate to Cas. Yugi looked curiously at Max, and Max added,

“Since we won, Cas should be able to come out from hiding.”

The device beeped and in front of Max, a projection of Cas appeared. Max smiled slightly at her and said,

“Good. I’m glad I was able to reach you. Everything ok on your end?”

Cas nodded and replied, “Yup. While you guys have been dueling, I found my superiors. They woke up, and I had the proper authorities arrest them.”

Max looked questioningly at Cas and Cas explained, “They were the ones responsible for freeing that guy.”

Max nodded in understanding and replied, “I see. We wouldn’t have had to go through all this trouble, otherwise. So I guess you’re in charge for now?”

Cas was about to reply when Kaiba approached Max, and looking at Cas’ projection, he angrily said,

“Where’s Alex? What happened to her?”

Cas looked confused, and Max explained, “After the duel, it seems like we were all knocked out. I only came to, but Alex and that Hades guy aren’t here. I think you’ll be able to find her?”

Cas nodded in understanding and replied, “Of course. Give me a minute.”

Cas then checked on one of the nearby devices, doing her best to locate Alex. Once she found out where Alex was, she looked surprised and commented,

“Wow, you won’t believe where Alex is now.”

Alex found herself in a white space, and it felt lonely. However, she wasn’t alone for long, as Andy appeared before her. He smiled softly at her and said,

“You did it, sis, but I knew you would.”

Alex replied, “Well, I didn’t do it alone. I had help.”

Andy replied, “I’m happy for you, and thanks for freeing me.”

Alex replied, “Of course, but are we dead?”

Shaking his head, Andy replied, “You’re only unconscious, so we’re in your head. I can’t stay here for long, but I wanted to thank you, and please tell Kaiba that I’m sorry.”

Alex nodded and replied, “I will.”

She took a breath and then said, “I’m afraid to ask this, but I need to know. Are you gone forever?”

Andy smiled sadly and replied, “I don’t know. I’m not sure what’s going to happen to me, but sis, I need to tell you this. No matter what, don’t go looking for me.”

Alex looked surprised and replied, “Why?”

Andy replied, “It’s more important that you try to move on. You finally found happiness, and maybe I was angry because I wasn’t a part of it. That made me think you abandoned me. But I realize that you never gave up on me.”

Alex replied, “I love you, and I’ve always wanted you back.”

Andy replied, “I know, but you should try to be happy with Kaiba and your friends. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that it isn’t good to continue obsessing over things that are long gone. I think you know that, too.”

Alex smiled sadly and replied, “I do. I just don’t want to say goodbye to you.”

Andy replied, “It’s ok, sis. I’ll be watching over you, and tell Kaiba that if he ever hurts you, I’ll haunt him.”

At that, Alex laughed and replied, “Can you really do that?”

Shrugging, Andy replied, “Don’t know, but we’ll find out.”

Alex was about to reply when Andy’s image began to fade from her view. She felt sad, wanting more time to talk to him, when suddenly…

“Ahh, I was wondering when you were going to wake up.”

Alex opened her eyes and found herself on a comfortable leather sofa. She looked around and it seemed as though she was inside a private plane. Then she turned towards the source of the voice who addressed her, and looking surprised, she said,

“Aren’t you…?”

The man smiled at her and replied, “You know it. The one and only Maximillian Pegasus, at your service.”

Alex replied, “I thought as much, but what happened? And I assume we’re on your plane?”

Alexa’s image appeared next to Alex and said, “That’s my doing. It’s a long story, but the short version is that I communicated with Pegasus through a dream and told him where he needed to be at the right time.”

Pegasus added, “Yes, that’s correct, and I got to witness a spectacular duel. I’ve never seen anything like it. You must be quite the dueling genius.”

Alex smiled in embarrassment and replied, “Thanks, sir. But why are we on a plane?”

Suddenly, she felt her injuries and added, “I get that I needed to be moved, but shouldn’t I be in a hospital?”

Pegasus waved his right hand in a dismissal and replied, “Your injuries aren’t that serious, and my doctors are more than capable of treating them. Besides, isn’t it more romantic this way?”

Alex gave a look and replied, “What do you mean?”

Pegasus smiled knowingly and replied, “I know all about you and Kaiba boy.”

Alex looked confused, and Pegasus added, “I have people who spy for me, dear, and they’re very resourceful. Also, I’m sure you want to solve that mystery of who warned Kaiba that you would leave.”

Alex replied, “That was you? You sent my video message to Seto before it was supposed to be sent?”

Pegasus replied, “My people, to be exact, but yes, that was my doing.”

Alexa added, “I informed Pegasus about your intentions, and he helped me to change things for all of us.”

Alex nodded and replied, “I see. You know, we need to have a long talk about your powers.”

Alexa laughed and replied, “Yes, yes, of course.”

Alex looked at Pegasus and said, “At least, that mystery has been finally cleared up. But what did you mean about the romantic part?”

Pegasus replied, “As I said, I know all about you and Kaiba boy, and think about it. Once he thinks you’re in danger because of me, he’ll come to your rescue on his white horse. Don’t you love it?”

Alex laughed awkwardly and replied, “I never thought about it, but technically, if Seto were to rescue me, he’d do so on his white dragon rather than a horse.”

She looked thoughtful and added, “Although, at the moment, I have all his three blue eyes white dragons.”

Pegasus laughed out loud and replied, “True, true. You are a clever one.”

He calmed down and then added, “I expect to get a call from Kaiba boy any minute-”

As though on cue, Pegasus’ phone suddenly rang. He put it on speaker and said,

“Why, hello, Kaiba boy. What can I do for you?”

On the other end, Kaiba shouted, “Where is she?! If you’ve harmed her-”

Pegasus interrupted, “I have no idea who you’re talking about.”

Kaiba replied, “Don’t mess with me. I know Alex is with you. Where is she? I want to speak to her now.”

Alex looked like she was about to say something when Pegasus shook his head, indicating her to remain quiet and to let him handle things. Feeling tired, Alex didn’t resist, curious to see what Pegasus would do.

Pegasus replied, “Oh, you mean her. Well, I may have roughed her up a bit. She tried her best to resist, but I couldn’t help making my moves on her.”

Alex looked incredulously at Pegasus, but Pegasus simply smiled at her.

Seething, Kaiba replied, “I will kill you, Pegasus!”

Kaiba hung up, ending the call. Alex then looked at Pegasus and said,

“Why did you say that, sir? You know that Seto really will kill you, especially after he finds out that I’m actually ok.”

Pegasus laughed and replied, “I couldn’t help it. Besides, this will bring out more of his knightly character for you.”

Alex shook her head and replied, “This is unnecessary, sir. I think I’ve caused Seto enough trouble as it is.”

Pegasus waved his hand and replied, “He’ll get over it, and I can picture it now. After Kaiba boy comes to your rescue, he’ll take you in his arms and kiss you passionately. Then he’ll whisk you away, the two of you will get married and live happily ever after.”

Alex sweatdropped and replied, “You are quite the romantic, sir.”

Nearby, Alexa laughed and replied, “Pegasus is definitely one of a kind, but he’s been helpful.”

The intercom on the plane turned on, and the pilot said,

“Mr. Pegasus, sir, we’ll be landing shortly.”

The intercom turned off, and looking at Alex, Pegasus said, “I can’t wait to show you my castle. You’ll love it.”

Alex replied, “I heard that you have a castle, and I guess the rumors weren’t exaggerated.”

Meanwhile, Kaiba, Yugi, Max, Mokuba, Joey, and a few other notable characters were on Kaiba’s plane, heading towards Pegasus’ island. Kaiba had just hung up in rage after Pegasus told him what he had supposedly done to Alex, and he was now muttering all kinds of death threats towards Pegasus. Mokuba was trying to calm down Kaiba, telling him that Alex was probably ok.

Max commented, “Mokuba’s right. Alex would never get taken down by anyone. You really should have more faith in her.”

Kaiba looked angrily at Max and replied, “This coming from the guy who has a crush on her.”

Max rolled his eyes and replied, “Correction. Had a crush. I promise that Alex and I are only friends.”

Yusaku added, “It’s true.”

Mokuba looked at Yusaku and asked, “So Max fell for someone from your time?”

Yusaku smiled and replied, “That’s correct, but I’m sure Max would rather say who it is himself when he’s ready.”

Kaiba asked, “Why aren’t you people more worried about Alex?”

Yusei replied, “It’s not like we aren’t worried, but this is Alex we’re talking about.”

Jaden added, “That’s right, and man, she’s an awesome duelist. But that just makes me want to have a rematch with her.”

Yugi looked questioningly at Jaden and asked, “What do you mean?”

Jaden looked back at Yugi and replied, “Alex and I had a duel, but she was able to beat me even though she claimed she wasn’t very good. But I could tell that she was holding back.”

Max replied, “She had to. For obvious reasons, she couldn’t use her usual deck.”

Mokuba added, “Yeah. It would be obvious that Alex is from the future.”

Jaden nodded, but before anyone could say anything else, the intercom on Kaiba’s plane turned on. The pilot then said,

“Mr. Kaiba, we’ll be on the island in about 15 minutes.”

Kaiba got up and walked towards the cockpit to have a word with the pilot. Once Kaiba was out of sight, Joey said,

“I’m still reeling from all of this, and I can’t believe we’re going back there.”

Inside Pegasus’ castle, in a cozy sitting room, Alex was sitting on the sofa. After a doctor finished tending to her wounds, one of the female employees at Pegasus’ castle helped Alex to change out of her clothes and into a beautiful, although a bit frilly, light blue dress with puffy sleeves and the skirt going down to her ankles. Meanwhile, Pegasus was sitting across from her in an armchair, and they were having some tea and cookies. Alex smiled awkwardly at Pegasus and said,

“I’m grateful for your help, sir, but-”

Pegasus interrupted, “Please, call me Maximillian or Max, if you prefer.”

Alex replied, “I’ll call you Maximillian then since it would be a bit confusing to address you with the same name as my friend.”

Pegasus replied, “True, true.”

He looked at her and continued, “Is something bothering you, other than Kaiba boy, of course?”

Alex looked at the clothes she was wearing, and she said,

“I don’t wish to sound ungrateful, and I know that I needed to change out of my clothes since I got roughed up a bit during that duel. But this isn’t my usual style.”

Pegasus replied, “Perhaps not, but I think they certainly suit you, and I’m sure that my Cecilia would have wanted you to use her clothes.”

Alex smiled softly and replied, “I can tell that you loved her very much. Again, I don’t mean to sound ungrateful. It’s just that this is a bit too girly for my preference.”

Pegasus looked thoughtful and replied, “How about this? You can order a whole new wardrobe, and I’ll pay for it.”

Alex gave a look and replied, “Umm, isn’t that a bit overkill? Besides, I don’t want to take advantage of your generosity. Can’t my usual clothes be mended? That would be more than sufficient.”

Pegasus replied, “One of the maids can try, but it would be difficult, and I don’t mind ordering new clothes for you. It’s the least I can do after all you, your friend, and Mokuba did.”

Alex replied, “When you put it that way, maybe I’d be ok with one new outfit? A whole wardrobe seems unnecessary.”

Pegasus replied, “Money’s not a problem for me, of course, but fine.”

Alex and Pegasus continued to talk for a while, and then one of Pegasus’ employees approached the latter, whispering something in his ear. Pegasus then looked at Alex and said,

“Ahh, it looks like we’re expecting guests, and based on what I was just told, it should be Kaiba boy coming to your rescue.”

Alex sweatdropped, but before she could say anything, Pegasus turned towards his employee and said,

“Please escort Ms. Lawrence into one of the guest rooms, so she can rest. Also, bring her a fashion catalog so she can order whatever she wishes.”

The employee nodded and replied, “Of course.” She then turned towards Alex and said,

“Follow me, please, miss.”

Alex got up and gave one last glance at Pegasus before following the employee out of the room.

About 10 minutes later, Kaiba and the others arrived on Pegasus’ island, and Kaiba took the lead, storming the castle and looking in rage for any signs of Alex or Pegasus. Along the way, some of Pegasus’ employees got roughed up, and while Yugi and the others followed Kaiba, they only fought in self-defense. However, it proved to be unnecessary, as most of the people in the castle gave the group a wide berth, especially after seeing how angry Kaiba was.

Soon, the group found Pegasus, sitting comfortably in an armchair and sipping tea. Pegasus looked up at the group and smiling devilishly, he said,

“I wasn’t expecting such a group to storm my castle like this. What can I do for you?”

Kaiba rushed towards Pegasus and grabbing him by the collar, he asked,

“Where is she? Where’s Alex?”

Pegasus replied, “Oh, I’m afraid you’re too late. I really didn’t mean to treat her so roughly, but it seems that her body couldn’t handle it-”

At that point, Kaiba’s rage was uncontrollable, and he was choking Pegasus. Max rushed towards the two of them and said,

“Hey, calm down. I’m sure he’s just exaggerating. Alex is fine.”

However, Kaiba ignored Max’s words and all other words the others would tell him, trying to calm him.

Soon after, the employee who escorted Alex into a guest room entered the room and looking shocked, she asked,

“What’s going on here?”

Joey looked at her and replied, “Kaiba’s choking the life out of your boss. What do you think?”

The employee replied, “If this is about the miss, she’s fine. She’s simply resting-”

Kaiba immediately let go of Pegasus and looking at the employee, he interrupted,

“Where’s Alex? Take me to her now.”

Pegasus, who was on his knees and trying to take in deep breaths, looked at his employee and said,

“Take Kaiba boy to her.”

The employee nodded and turning to Kaiba, she said,

“Please follow me.”

She and Kaiba then left the room, leaving the others alone with Pegasus. Max turned to Mokuba and said,

“Remind me to never tick off Kaiba.”

Mokuba nodded and replied, “I will. Seto can have quite the temper.”

Alex was resting comfortably on a bed in a spare guest room, looking out the window and gazing at the sunset. Her thoughts were focused on Andy. Although she knew that it was best to let him go, Alex also knew how difficult it would be. Still, she wanted to try, for both of them. Alexa looked at her with concern although she didn’t say anything.

Suddenly, Alexa felt another presence in the room and turned to see who it was. Smiling, she looked at Alex and said,

“It looks like you have a guest. I’ll leave you two alone.”

Alexa then faded, and curiously, Alex turned to see who it was. Of course, it was Kaiba, and Kaiba was relieved to see Alex and more importantly, Alex was ok. The employee commented,

“As you can see, the miss is alright.”

She looked at Alex and added, “Your new clothes are being express delivered, so they should arrive in an hour or two.”

Alex nodded and replied, “Thank you.”

The employee then said, “I’ll be outside if you need me.”

The door was closed then, and now it was Alex and Kaiba alone. Alex didn’t know what to say, as it was the first time that they were together after the duel. Meanwhile, Kaiba was relieved to see Alex although a part of him was angry at her, too. He was about to say something when Alex suddenly closed her eyes and feeling all the emotions from the day overwhelming her, she couldn’t help weeping quietly. Alarmed, Kaiba rushed towards her and held her in his arms, rubbing her back. Alex cried on Kaiba’s shoulder, not knowing what to say. However, no words needed to be spoken between them, and Kaiba understood that it was best for Alex to pour all her emotions out and let them go.

Chapter 62

Alex continued to cry on Kaiba’s shoulder for a while until it felt like no more tears would come out. Once Alex was calm enough to talk, she looked at Kaiba and quietly said,

“Sorry about that.”

Kaiba frowned and replied, “You have some apologizing to do, but never apologize for showing your feelings to me.”

Alex smiled a bit, and then Kaiba continued, “I was prepared to get angry at you, but you’ve already been through enough.”

Alex replied, “Thanks for sparing me. You can yell at me later if you want.”

Kaiba nodded, and then he asked, “Are you ok? He didn’t hurt you, did he?”

Alex replied, “I assume you’re referring to Pegasus, but no, he didn’t.”

It was then that the door was opened, and in the hallway stood Pegasus along with Yugi and the others. Pegasus, who had recovered from his near death choking experience, said,

“I wouldn’t have harmed this lovely lady, Kaiba boy. I’m insulted that you’d think, otherwise.”

Kaiba gritted his teeth at Pegasus and replied, “You said that you touched her and hurt her.”

Pegasus playfully replied, “And you actually believed me?”

Kaiba was about to reply when Alex said, “Ok, let’s all calm down. I’m ok, and that’s the most important thing, right?”

Kaiba calmed down although he still gave death glares at Pegasus. Yugi peeked at Alex and smiling, he said,

“I’m happy you’re ok, Alex. We were all worried.”

Max grinned and added, “That’s right, although some were clearly more worried than others.”

He looked at Kaiba, and Kaiba avoided looking at anyone. Alex couldn’t help smiling and reached out to touch Kaiba’s hand, feeling moved that he was so worried about her.

She then looked at Max and Mokuba and asked, “How are you two? Everything ok?”

Mokuba nodded and replied, “Yeah, we’re good. We were all knocked out after that final attack, but we’re ok.”

Joey then said, “Man, I have so many questions. We need to talk.”

As it looked like the others were about to speak up, Pegasus said, “Now we mustn’t overwhelm the lady.”

He looked at Alex and said, “After your new clothes arrive and you get changed, we’ll have a huge banquet to celebrate.”

Kaiba looked annoyed and replied, “We’re not staying here. I’m taking Alex and Mokuba back to Domino. The others can do what they want.”

The others that Kaiba addressed looked annoyed at him, and laughing, Pegasus replied, “I thought you might say that, and I understand why. This place must bring back bad memories. But Ms. Lawrence is in no condition to be traveling. She needs to rest here overnight. Certainly, taking her back can wait until morning?”

Kaiba replied, “If you had just taken Alex to a hospital instead of kidnapping her, this wouldn’t have been necessary.”

Pegasus looked like he was about to protest when Alex said, “Technically, I was kidnapped since I was unconscious and didn’t have a say.”

She then looked at Kaiba and said, “But I don’t think it would hurt to stay here for the night, and you’ll watch over me, right?”

Kaiba blushed and nodding, he replied, “Of course. I won’t let you out of my sight.”

Pegasus replied, “That’s settled then. Now why don’t we leave these two lovebirds alone while we have some tea?”

Joey looked like he was about to argue when Yugi grabbed his arm and said, “Let’s go, Joey. They deserve some more alone time.”

After Pegasus and the others left and the door was again closed, Alex looked at Kaiba and said,

“I’m sorry for causing all this trouble.”

Kaiba looked surprised and replied, “It’s not your fault.”

He sighed and continued, “I guess things mostly worked out. I have questions, too, but you probably want to wait until we meet up with those morons.”

Alex laughed a bit and replied, “Yeah. I don’t want to have to repeat myself.”

Kaiba nodded and he held Alex in his arms as the two of them rested.

About an hour and a half later, there was a knock at the door. Alex looked at Kaiba, and after a nod, Kaiba got up to answer it. It was the woman who had been attending to Alex, and in her hands, there was a huge box. Smiling, she said,

“The miss’ new clothes just arrived.”

Kaiba nodded, letting her inside the room. The employee approached Alex and handed her the box. Alex opened it and inside, there was a brand new outfit, which consisted of a light purple blouse, blue jeans, and white sneakers. The employee commented,

“I would have gone with something fancier, but Mr. Pegasus ordered me to accommodate to your wishes.”

Alex smiled and replied, “It looks great.”

She then turned to Kaiba and said, “I’m going to get changed. Would you mind waiting outside?”

Kaiba smirked and replied, “As tempting as it would be to refuse, I know you’d only punch me.”

Alex laughed and replied, “You know me well.”

Kaiba then left the room, closing the door. Alex then got changed into her new outfit, with some help. It only took a few minutes, but once Alex was finished, she looked at herself in a full length mirror. She looked more like her usual self in that outfit, her face was all clean with no traces of tears, and her hair was up in a ponytail. The employee looked on with satisfaction and commented,

“You look great, miss.”

She then opened the door and looking at Kaiba, she said, “The miss is all done.”

Kaiba nodded and re-entered the room. He gazed at Alex and let out a warm smile, just for her. Alex smiled back and said,

“It feels great to be wearing more normal clothes, not that I didn’t appreciate what I wore before.”

Kaiba commented, “You look beautiful.”

Alex blushed, and she and Kaiba just looked at each other for a few moments, forgetting about everything else. There was a nearby cough and turning towards the direction of the source, Alex and Kaiba saw the employee smiling knowingly at them. She said,

“I don’t wish to interrupt, but Mr. Pegasus said that after you’re dressed, I’m to escort you and Mr. Kaiba to the dining room.”

Kaiba sighed, and noticing this, Alex replied, “It’s ok, and I am getting a little hungry. Besides, we’ll have plenty of time to be alone later.”

Kaiba replied, “That’s true.”

He then offered his arm, which Alex happily accepted. The employee led the way out of the room and down a flight of stairs towards the living room. Along the way, Alex thought of something and looking at Kaiba, she asked,

“What’s going on back in Domino? The city must be in a huge mess.”

Kaiba replied, “Your boss/guardian, Cas, is taking care of it, and I had Roland help.”

Alex nodded and then she said, “Please don’t be harsh on Mr. Roland. He was against us rushing into things, but Mokuba and I insisted.”

Kaiba replied, “You’re really reckless, you know, and apparently, Mokuba’s picked that up from you.”

Alex looked apologetically at Kaiba and said, “Sorry. I know we need to explain things, but let’s wait until we’re with the others.”

Kaiba nodded, and the group made their way into the dining room. There was a huge buffet style arranged, where everyone could grab a plate and choose whatever foods they wanted. It looked like some of them had already started. Pegasus noticed Alex and Kaiba and said,

“Welcome back, you two, and you look wonderful, dear.”

Alex smiled politely and replied, “Thank you.”

Kaiba looked annoyingly at Joey and asked, “Why is Wheeler stuffing his face like that? It’s rude to eat without us.”

Joey glared at Kaiba and laughing, Alex replied, “It’s ok. Joey must have been hungry, and there’s plenty of food.”

Yugi replied, “True. I tried to hold Joey back, but he said that he couldn’t take it anymore and rushed towards the buffet table. But it looks like a few others did, too.”

He turned towards the direction of some others, and Alex noticed that Yuma was stuffing his face, which made Astral sigh. Alex replied, “I hope we didn’t keep everyone waiting.”

Max approached Alex and replied, “Not at all. It’s good to see you’re ok even though we just saw you.”

Alex nodded, and she looked around, realizing that not everyone was present. Before she could comment on it, though, Max added,

“Cas had some of them sent back.”

Alex replied, “I see. I’m surprised she still allowed the others to stay, though.”

Yusei approached Alex and said, “It’s only temporary. We wanted to make sure you’re ok, and Jack made some comment about wanting his red dragon archfiend back.”

Alex laughed awkwardly, and it was then that Alexa appeared. Alexa said,

“He’s going to have to wait until tomorrow. Your monsters need to be purified.”

Yusei looked confused, and Alex explained, “Alexa told me that Hades corrupted your ace monsters, but my phoenix has the ability to heal and purify them. I don’t know how it all works since it’s more magic than science. But no worries. I’ll return them all to you tomorrow.”

Kaiba looked at Alex and asked, “You believe all this?”

Alex shrugged and replied, “I’m open to the possibility, and as a wise person once said, magic is simply science that has yet to be explained.”

Kaiba replied, “I suppose I can accept that.”

Jaden approached the group and asked, “Speaking of that guy, what happened to him?”

Alex was about to reply when Pegasus said, “Now, now. We should allow the lady to eat first. This is all in her honor, after all.”

Alex replied, “Thanks, but this is for Max and Mokuba, too, right? I didn’t do this alone.”

Pegasus nodded and replied, “Yes, yes, of course. Now go and get something to eat, and we can talk later.”

Alex nodded, and she and Kaiba went to get some food. Alex was especially famished from the events of the day.

Once everyone got their food and sat at the long rectangular dining table, with Pegasus at the head of it, Alex looked around at everyone, most of whom were eating. She couldn’t help smiling and shaking her head as she began to eat as well. Max, who was sitting at Alex’s left side, looked at her curiously and asked,

“What is it?”

Alex looked at him and said, “This feels weird. It’s like the fourth wall is being broken on so many levels.”

Max laughed and replied, “You said it. Who would have thought we’d see all these guys here in one place?”

Kaiba looked at the two of them and asked, “What are you two conspiring?”

Alex smiled at him and replied, “Nothing important. Just how weird this all feels.”

Kaiba replied, “I can’t wait until it’s just us two again.”

Alex replied, “Me, too.”

She then thought of something and turning to Yugi, she asked, “Yugi, are you feeling ok? Alexa told me that she was able to return Yami as well as the others, so you should be able to detect his presence.”

Yugi nodded and replied, “Yeah, it’s like before. But it felt weird not to have him with me for a while.”

Alex nodded and replied, “I understand. Alexa says that she’s sorry, but she couldn’t risk Hades getting to him.”

Jaden looked at Alex and was about to ask the same question as before when taking the hint, Alex said,

“You all want to know what happened to him.”

She thought back to what happened right after Alex’s phoenix made the final attack.

After the smoke cleared, Alex opened her eyes and found herself on her stomach. She looked around and noticed that the others who were imprisoned were free but that they, along with Max and Mokuba, were unconscious. She heard a nearby cough and turning towards its source, she saw Hades on his knees. He looked very weak, but despite that, he smiled at her and said,

“Congratulations, my lady. You are worthy.”

Alex looked confused and asked, “What do you mean?”

Hades replied, “For a long time, I refused to follow in the footsteps of my brothers and sisters. I know it was my duty to serve your family, but I was too angry.”

Alex looked sympathetically at Hades and replied, “I understand. Assuming that the mythological lore is accurate, I’d feel resentful, too, if I were forced to be the ruler of the dead. That place doesn’t look cheery.”

At Alex’s comment, Hades laughed and replied, “Yes, that’s true.”

He calmed down and then said, “Through this duel, you helped me to see how wrong my actions were, so I’ll no longer cause trouble.”

Alex replied, “I appreciate that, but what happens now?”

Hades replied, “Although I wouldn’t be willing to serve under your family because of past circumstances, I will agree to follow you.”

Alex looked at Hades, and he added, “You’re not like your ancestors, so I’m willing to take a chance. You should have a blank card in your deck. You can use it on me, and then my power will be yours.”

Alex nodded, and she took out the blank card. However, before she held it out towards Hades, she asked,

“What’s going to happen to Andy and Kiara?”

Hades furrowed his eyebrows and replied, “Kiara will be sent back to her proper time, and all her memories of this will be wiped. She’ll be the Kisara that she was always meant to be. As for your brother, I don’t know.”

He sighed and then added, “I’m sorry for using him to try to manipulate you.”

Alex smiled sadly and replied, “I admit that your actions upset me, but I understand why you did them. I just hope Andy will be at peace.”

Hades replied, “He knows the truth, so I’m sure he will be.”

Alex nodded, but there was still sadness in her eyes, which didn’t escape Hades’ notice. She then held out the blank card out, which pulled Hades towards it.

Once that was done, Alex passed out until she woke up later on Pegasus’ plane.

She recalled to the others about what happened and after she was done speaking, Mokuba looked sad and said,

“Alex, I’m sorry. I wish we could have gotten Andy back for you.”

Alex smiled sadly and replied, “I know, but it’s ok. I was able to talk to him one more time after all that. Don’t ask me for the details. I think he’ll be ok, and I’ll try to move on.”

Kaiba frowned and said, “I’ll find another way to get him back.”

Alex shook her head and replied, “No. It isn’t good to hang onto things that are long gone. I appreciate that you want to help me, but…”

She trailed off, not knowing what to say. Kaiba balled his hands into fists, feeling helpless.

The mood continued to be somber for a while until there was a nearby beeping. Alex looked at Max and asked,

“Is Cas trying to contact you?”

Max nodded and replied, “Yeah. Let me see what she wants.”

He took out his communication device, and Cas’ image appeared. Cas looked apologetically at the group and said,

“Hey, everyone. I’m glad to see that Alex is ok.”

Alex smiled and replied, “Yup. I’m sorry if I worried anyone.”

Cas shook her head and replied, “No problem.”

Max asked, “What’s going on? Is there any problem with the clean up?”

Cas replied, “Nothing like that. I’ve sent agents to take care of repairing the damage that Hades caused, but-”

Suddenly, an image of Jack appeared, and Jack suddenly called out,

“I want my dragon archfiend back!”

Beside him, Crow looked like he was trying to calm down Jack and he said,

“Jack, just trust Alex. She won’t keep your monster.”

Jack glared at Alex and replied, “Like I’d ever trust her.”

Alex rolled her eyes and asked, “Geez, what’s his problem?”

Crow replied, “I think Jack is still sore about that.”

Alex looked questioningly at Crow, and Crow added, “When the two of you had that duel.”

Realization dawned on Alex, and she replied, “You mean that turbo duel that technically doesn’t count?”

Crow was about to reply when Jack yelled, “That doesn’t matter! I demand a rematch after I get my archfiend back.”

Alex shook her head and sighed to herself. Cas replied, “Sorry, but he was insistent on talking to you.”

Alex replied, “It’s ok.”

She then looked at Jack and said, “You really should learn to let things go, and losing isn’t the end of the world. But I’ll be happy to accept a rematch. As for your archfiend, I’ll give it to Yusei tomorrow.”

Yusei added, “Our monsters need to be healed before Alex can return them.”

Jack huffed, and Pegasus commented, “Personally, if I were you, dear, I’d keep them. You’d be the most powerful duelist ever, not that you already are.”

Alex gave Pegasus a look, and Jack yelled, “What are you talking about?! I don’t care if you’re the creator of duel monsters. There’s no way she’s keeping my archfiend.”

The antics ensued, and Alex couldn’t help laughing quietly. Joey noticed this and commented,

“It looks like you’re feeling better. But seriously, you’re not gonna keep our monsters, are ya?”

Kaiba replied, “Do you really have so little faith in Alex, Wheeler?”

However, Kaiba couldn’t help wondering as well if Alex might submit to temptation and just keep their monsters. Alex smiled and replied,

“As tempting as that is, your monsters wouldn’t sync well with my deck, and there’d be some internal conflict with my monsters.”

Yusaku said, “Speaking of your deck, it looks like you improved on it since our last speed duel. I didn’t think it needed any further improvement.”

Alex replied, “There’s always room for improvement, and I figured that it couldn’t hurt.”

Yuya added, “Your monsters are awesome, Alex!”

Alex happily replied, “Thanks. I think we work great as a team.”

Cas looked at Jack and asked, “Are you satisfied now? I’ll return Yusei to New Domino tomorrow after he gets your monster back.”

Jack huffed and replied, “Whatever.”

Cas looked to the others and said, “We’ll be going now, but Alex, take it easy.”

Alex replied, “I will.”

Kaiba added, “I’ll look after her.”

Cas smiled and then her image, along with Jack’s and Crow’s, disappeared.

The mood lightened up, and everyone resumed eating.

After dinner and dessert was over, Pegasus said, “How about we all retire for the night? I know it’s early, but I believe Ms. Lawrence needs her rest.”

Alex gave a look and asked, “Are you implying that I’m weak?”

Pegasus held his hands up and replied, “Not at all. I was simply giving an excuse for you and Kaiba boy to make out.”

Alex blushed and shook her head. Kaiba smirked and replied, “We’ll happily take you up on that, but we’re leaving first thing in the morning.”

Pegasus replied, “Yes, yes. Now off you go, you two, and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

Joey was about to say something when Yugi shook his head at him and said, “You’ll have time to talk to Alex later, and Kaiba won’t harm her.”

Joey frowned and could only watch as Kaiba helped Alex to her feet and then escorted her back to her room, where Kaiba would stay with her for the night.

A little later, Alex had changed out of her clothes and into a clean nightgown that the employee who was attending to Alex had given her. She was lying down in bed and Kaiba was lying down next to her. He held her in his arms and said,

“I’ll never let you go, Alex.”

Alex smiled softly at Kaiba and replied, “I don’t want to depend on you too much.”

Kaiba replied, “Rely on me as much as you want.”

He then thought of something and asked, “Is there anything I can do for you?”

Alex replied, “You’ve done more than enough. If anything, I’m the one who’s caused you so much trouble.”

Kaiba replied, “You are a handful, but you are the best thing that’s ever happened. I love you, Alex.”

Alex smiled softly and replied, “And I love you, Seto.”

The two of them shared a sweet good night kiss and then fell asleep in each other’s arms.

Chapter 63

A little later the next morning, Alex, along with Kaiba, Mokuba, and the others, were on a Kaiba plane, heading back to Domino City. After they had breakfast with Pegasus, Kaiba insisted that they get going, so they all said their goodbyes. However, Pegasus gave Alex a small package just before she boarded the plane, and Alex was now gazing curiously at the package in her hands.

Max looked at her and said, “You should open it. We’re all curious as to what Pegasus gave you.”

Alex nodded and turning to Kaiba, she said, “I can’t believe you had this thing scanned for bomb residue.”

Kaiba frowned and replied, “You can never be too careful with him. I should know.”

Alex smiled awkwardly and replied, “I understand, but if it had been a bomb, I would have been able to diffuse it quickly.”

Joey looked surprised and asked, “Ya know how to diffuse bombs?”

Alex shrugged and replied, “Standard training for all time agents.”

She looked at Yuma and Astral and added, “I had to diffuse a bomb at that mall that time.”

Yuma had this realization look in his eyes and replied, “When I was dueling against that guy?”

Alex nodded and replied, “Yeah. That’s why I was there, but I didn’t want to alarm anyone, so I took care of it quietly.”

Max added, “Of course, Cas freaked out immediately, so she took Alex back to the time agency afterwards.”

Yuma replied, “So that’s why we couldn’t have our duel.”

Alex replied, “That’s right. I think Cas overreacted over the whole thing. I knew what I was doing.”

Kaiba looked annoyed and replied, “You are reckless, woman. I’ll have to watch over you even more now.”

Alex gave an exasperated look and was about to say something when Mokuba said,

“Alex, since Seto says that package is safe, you should go ahead and open it.”

Alex nodded and after opening the package, she noticed a booster pack along with an envelope that contained a letter. She opened up the booster pack first, and her eyes widened upon realizing what was inside. She commented,

“Wow, there was no need for this.”

Curiously, Max peeked at the cards that were in the booster pack and replied, “I can’t believe it. Those cards are going to really help your deck.”

He then pouted and asked, “But why only you? It’s like he’s making it sound like you did all the work.”

Alex smiled apologetically and replied, “I know. He might have taken a liking to me, but these cards will help.”

She then took out the envelope and tore it open, taking out the letter. She quickly read the contents of the letter, and after she was done, she shook her head and was doing her best to suppress her laughter. Yugi looked at her and asked,

“What did Pegasus say?”

Before Alex could reply, Kaiba grabbed the letter from Alex and quickly read it. He groaned and replied,

“I can’t believe him.”

Yuya replied, “What? Tell us.”

Mokuba then looked at the letter and after reading its contents, he laughed out loud and said, “He mostly said that these cards would help make Alex’s deck stronger.”

Jaden replied, “Ok, but I don’t get what’s so funny.”

Mokuba said, “He says that Alex should have taken up his offer to become his adopted daughter.”

Alex added, “I know. I’m pretty certain he was just messing with me, though, and it would feel way too weird.”

Kaiba said, “The next time I see him, I’m going to punch him.”

Alex touched Kaiba’s arm and replied, “He can be mischievous, but he’s done some good.”

Kaiba looked in disbelief and Alex added, “He was responsible for my video message getting to you early.”

Yugi commented, “Oh, I wondered how that happened. It looks like Pegasus has turned over a new leaf.”

Kaiba replied, “Maybe, but I still don’t trust him.”

Alex nodded in understanding, and then she turned back to look at the cards in the booster pack. She commented,

“It was nice of him to give these to me. They’ll definitely help. Now my deck is nearly complete.”

Max asked, “What do you mean? It is complete. You have the most powerful monsters and the best archetypes in your deck along with those support cards that Pegasus gave you.”

An image of Hades suddenly appeared from within Alex’s deck, and Hades commented,

“He’s right, my lady. Especially now that you have me to fight alongside you.”

Alex smiled and replied, “That’s true, and you know, you can drop the formalities. Just call me Alex.”

The others looked on in disbelief at Hades, and noticing this, Alex quickly explained, “Yeah, my bracelet has that ability to have my monsters appear, even outside of duels. And Hades is on my side now.”

Hades nodded and said, “I apologize for all the trouble I’ve caused. I don’t expect any forgiveness.”

Alex looked thoughtful and said, “My deck is still missing something, though.”

Hades looked at Alex and asked, “What do you think it is? Our family may be able to help.”

Alex was silent for a minute, and then she said, “It’s going to sound silly, so forget it.”

Kaiba looked at Alex and said, “Just tell me. Whatever it is, I can get it for you.”

Alex was quiet for a few moments and then she said, “I, umm… It needs a kuriboh!”

Alex looked distressed, and sweatdropping, Max replied, “Alex…”

Mokuba added, “Really?”

Alex looked at the two of them and replied, “My deck needs cuteness. Sure, it has powerful monsters and awesome spell and trap cards, but it needs a kuriboh.”

She looked saddened, and suddenly, Alexa appeared at her side. She shook her head and commented, “You are silly, my descendant.”

Alex replied, “But kuriboh is totally awesome, and no deck is complete without one.”

She nodded her head in affirmation, and Kaiba looked like he didn’t know what to make of Alex’s behavior. Taking advantage of this, Joey looked at Alex and asked,

“If I get ya a kuriboh, will you dump Kaiba and give us another chance?”

Before anyone else could reply, though, an image of Yugi’s kuriboh suddenly emerged from Yugi’s deck. It was unusual that everyone could see it although Alexa simply shrugged and said,

“The powers of the bracelet, but I guess kuriboh is here for a reason?”

Yugi’s kuriboh murmured happily and there was a brief flash of light. A few seconds later, a kuriboh card appeared in Alex’s hands. Alex looked delighted by the surprise and looking at Yugi’s kuriboh, she asked,

“Did you create this just for me?”

Yugi’s kuriboh nodded happily, and Alex happily exclaimed, “Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are awesome. I’m going to treasure it always.”

Yugi’s kuriboh shortly disappeared after, and Hades replied, “I hope you’re not going to give that creature preference over us.”

Immediately, Alex shook her head and replied, “Of course not. I believe in fair, equal treatment although I like cuteness a lot.”

She looked serious and added, “But I promise that I’ll always respect all of you and if you ever wish to not work together, I’ll understand.”

Hades looked satisfied with Alex’s reply and said, “It looks like I chose wisely to follow you.”

He disappeared as well, and then Alex sighed happily. Kaiba frowned and looking at Alex, he said, “Come with me now.”

Alex looked confused and replied, “What? Why?”

Without a reply, Kaiba got up, got Alex to her feet, and then pulled her along towards another section of the plane where they would have privacy. Joey looked concerned until Mokuba said,

“It’s ok. Seto probably just wants to talk to Alex alone for a while.”

Once Alex and Kaiba were alone, Kaiba looked seriously at Alex and asked, “You weren’t going to seriously consider Wheeler’s offer, were you?”

Alex replied, “Oh, you mean about giving him another chance?”

She sighed and then continued, “I thought you’d know me better by now. I only want to be with you always. What must I do to prove it to you?”

Kaiba smirked a bit and replied, “You have made me worry about you more than I’d like, so you need to be punished accordingly.”

Alex replied, “Uhh, what do you mean?”

Without another word spoken between them, Kaiba wrapped his arms around Alex’s waist and passionately kissed her on the lips, making sure that she would be punished effectively.

As Alex and Kaiba were away from the others for a while, Max said, “I wonder what’s taking them so long.”

Mokuba replied, “I’ll go check.”

He then got up and went to the section of the plane that Alex and Kaiba were in. Once there, he saw that the door was mostly closed, but a little was open, just enough so that Mokuba could see what they were up to. He couldn’t help smiling as he saw how Kaiba was kissing Alex and Alex was happily kissing him back. The two looked to be in bliss, and Alex couldn’t help holding back a contented moan as she felt Kaiba’s lips on her neck.

Mokuba then quickly returned to the others, and Joey asked, “So, what’s going on?”

Mokuba smiled and replied, “Big bro’s assaulting Alex with his lips.”

Joey exclaimed, “What?! Alex is being attacked?”

He got up, looking like he was about to go rescue Alex, when Max sighed and said,

“Even I get what Mokuba’s saying. Those two are kissing, Joey.”

Joey calmed down and sat down again although he couldn’t help frowning. Yugi smiled sympathetically and said,

“It’s best to let it go. They’re happy together.”

A little later, Alex and Kaiba returned to the others although Alex noticed the knowing looks that almost everyone was giving them. After the couple sat down, Alex asked,

“What’s going on? Why’s everyone looking at us like that?”

Yusaku replied, “Mokuba told us what you two were doing in there.”

He looked at Kaiba and added, “You are a lucky man.”

Kaiba smirked and replied, “I know.”

Yusei looked at Alex and pointing to a spot on her neck, he blushed a bit and said, “I’d get that covered up if I were you.”

Alex looked confused until she took out a pocket mirror to focus on the spot that Yusei pointed to. Blushing deeply, Alex replied, “Umm, yeah. I should have some concealer here somewhere.”

Alex was about to rummage in her bag for one when Kaiba stopped her and said,

“Don’t. I want everyone to know that you’re mine.”

Alex blushed even more, not knowing what to say. Joey muttered, “Ya don’t need to worry, moneybags. I can take the hint.”

Alex looked up at Joey and replied, “I’m sorry, Joey. It’s not like I had intended for things to go this way, but-”

Joey shook his head and replied, “It’s ok. I mean, I don’t get what ya see in him, but if you’re happy, that’s what matters.”

Alex smiled softly and replied, “I am.”

As things were calming down, Kaiba realized something and looking annoyed, he said,

“I get why Yugi and the puppy have to be here, but the rest of you could have left.”

Yusei calmly replied, “We had to see what Pegasus gave Alex, and we still need our cards back. We’ll leave once we get them.”

Alex replied, “Ahh yes, of course.”

She turned to Alexa and asked, “They should be ok again, right?”

Alexa replied, “Yes, enough time has passed.”

Alex nodded and then she took out her deck. She handed everyone back their ace monsters along with their friends’ monsters as well. As Alex handed back Jack’s red dragon archfiend to Yusei, she said,

“I hope Jack can finally stop complaining.”

Yusei replied, “Me, too, but I think he’ll still want to have that rematch.”

Alex replied, “I guess we’ll have to see.”

Alex then said, “Ok, that takes care of that. Now onto the matter of returning everyone.”

Max replied, “I’ll contact Cas.”

He took out his communication device and soon after, Cas’ projection appeared. Alex then said, “I’ve returned everyone’s monsters, so how are we going to handle returning them?”

Cas looked thoughtful and replied, “I can return them now, of course, but I think it would better if we do this after everyone is on firm ground again. Otherwise, it would raise some suspicion as to why there are suddenly way fewer passengers than before.”

Alex nodded and turning to Kaiba, she said, “Cas has a point. I know you want things to be just us again, and that’ll happen soon. After we land, how about we all head to the mansion and then Cas can take care of returning the others?”

Kaiba sighed and replied, “I guess that will work. But the sooner we land, the better.”

Alex smiled and she then gave Kaiba a quick kiss on the lips as a silent thank you. Cas then said,

“Ok, let me know when you’re ready and I’ll take care of it.”

Cas’ projection then disappeared, and Alex and the others continued to chat until the plane was ready to land at Domino airport.

Chapter 64

A little over two weeks had passed since and now it was the first week of May, Golden Week. Things calmed down, and Domino was back to its usual state. It was almost like the events with Hades and that duel never happened even though Alex and the others knew, otherwise.

Alex woke up to a beautiful, sunny Friday morning, and after her vision cleared, she saw Kaiba gazing fondly at her. He smiled and said,

“Happy birthday, Alex.”

For a few moments, Alex was confused until she remembered that today was her birthday. She smiled back and replied, “Thanks, Seto.”

She sat up in bed and noticed that Kaiba was already dressed for work. She asked,

“Is this why you insisted I take today off?”

Kaiba nodded and replied, “Yes. I remembered that today is your birthday, and I’m going to make sure that it’s the best ever.”

Alex replied, “You’re sweet, but I can still go to work. I don’t mind working, even if it is my birthday.”

Kaiba shook his head and replied, “Not that I’d mind, but…”

As Kaiba trailed off, Alex looked questioningly at Kaiba until Kaiba continued,

“I wasn’t supposed to say anything, but I know you won’t be able to hold back your curiosity. Mokuba and Yugi insisted that you take today off. I think they’re planning something for you.”

Alex nodded and replied, “Ahh, I see. I’ll pretend to be surprised then although there’s no need for such a fuss. But I’ll indulge them.”

Kaiba nodded and replied, “Good. I’ll be going out now, but we’re going to have our own private celebration tonight. Be ready for it.”

Alex smiled and replied, “I’m looking forward to it.”

The couple leaned in for a brief kiss, and then Kaiba left the room and headed out of the mansion. Once Alex was alone, she took her time getting ready, washing up and getting dressed. Once she was done, she went out of the room and downstairs to the dining room, where there was a delicious breakfast spread out on the table along with a stack of beautifully wrapped gifts. Also, at the table, there was Mokuba, and as he looked at Alex, he got up, hugged her, and said,

“Happy birthday, Alex.”

Alex happily returned the hug and replied, “Thanks, Mokuba.”

Mokuba held her hand and led her to her usual seat at the table. After they were both seated, Mokuba said,

“Seto probably already told you, but he wants to have a private celebration with you later.”

Alex nodded and replied, “Yup, he told me.”

She looked at the gifts and asked, “Where did all these gifts come from?”

Mokuba grinned and replied, “Max brought them earlier. Jaden and the others wanted to get you something, not only as a thank you but to wish you a happy birthday.”

Alex smiled softly and replied, “That’s very sweet. I feel like I might end up getting spoiled, though.”

Mokuba shook his head and replied, “It’s your birthday, so you deserve lots of spoiling. Cas sent over a gift as well, and Max said that he’s going to give you his gift later. As for me…”

Mokuba held out a small gift-wrapped box towards Alex, which Alex happily accepted. Alex said,

“Thanks, Mokuba. Should I open my gifts now and then we eat, or should we eat first and then open gifts?”

Mokuba replied, “Gifts first. I want to see what they sent you.”

Alex laughed and nodding, she went ahead and opened all her gifts. They ranged from rare cards to the more usual presents, like plushies and trinkets. After she finished unveiling all her gifts, Alex said,

“I’ll definitely pass my thanks onto them later, and thank you, Mokuba.”

Mokuba grinned, pleased that Alex was happy, and he replied, “I’m happy. Now let’s eat because you have a busy day ahead.”

Alex looked curiously at Mokuba and replied, “I would ask, but I have a feeling that you’re going to keep things a surprise from me today.”

Mokuba laughed and replied, “That’s right.”

Alex shook her head, and then she and Mokuba proceeded to have breakfast while one of the servants went ahead to take Alex’s gifts, briefly mentioning that they would be in Alex and Kaiba’s room.

After breakfast was finished, Mokuba looked at Alex and said,

“Roland’s going to take us out, but I’m supposed to bring you back here before it gets too late.”

Alex nodded happily and replied, “Ok, let’s go then.”

She and Mokuba got up from their seats and after grabbing their jackets, they went out the front door, where Roland was waiting for them along with a small luxury car. Roland smiled at Alex and Mokuba and said,

“Good morning, Mr. Mokuba, Ms. Alex. And I wish you a very happy birthday, Ms. Alex.”

Alex smiled back and replied, “Thanks, Mr. Roland.”

Roland held the car door open, and after Alex and Mokuba got inside, Roland got into the driver’s seat and started up the car, heading towards their destination. As they were traveling, Alex looked at Mokuba and asked,

“Since we have a bit of time, how have you been doing? I’m happy we finally have some calm.”

Mokuba replied, “Me, too, but I enjoyed dueling with you and Max. That was fun.”

Alex laughed and replied, “I enjoyed it, too. I hope that Seto wasn’t too harsh on you, though.”

Mokuba replied, “You know how Seto is. He didn’t like that we kept things from him, but since everything worked out, he wasn’t too annoyed. I only wish I could duel openly like that again.”

Alex nodded and replied, “I understand. It must be difficult to limit your dueling style after that.”

Mokuba replied, “True. How do you do it? How do you hold back when you’ve been to those other time periods?”

Alex replied, “I have to prepare myself mentally beforehand and try my best not to succumb to temptation. It helps that my deck can be adjusted accordingly. For some archetypes, though, it can be impossible to adjust, but that’s not the case for me.”

Mokuba nodded and replied, “I see.”

He looked thoughtful, and Alex said, “If you want to continue dueling here, I can help you build a deck that makes sure to follow the rules in this time.”

Mokuba replied, “I’ll think about it.”

The two of them continued to chat for a bit until the group arrived at their destination. They were outside the game shop, and Alex asked,

“So this is our destination?”

Mokuba smiled and replied, “That’s right.”

He turned to Roland and said, “Thanks, Roland. I’ll call you later when we’re ready to go home.”

Roland nodded and replied, “Of course, Mr. Mokuba.”

After Roland drove off, Mokuba held Alex’s hand and said, “Now you have to close your eyes.”

Alex gave a look, and Mokuba added, “It’s a surprise, so you have to.”

Alex smiled and closed her eyes. Mokuba then led her by the hand as they entered the game shop. Although Alex couldn’t hear a sound, she could feel that she was being taken to the living area. Once they stopped walking, Mokuba let go of her hand. Alex asked,

“Is it ok for me to open my eyes now?”

Before Mokuba could reply, the room, which had been pitch black, was suddenly flooded with light, and Alex could hear,

“Happy birthday!”

Instinctively, Alex opened her eyes and saw Yugi, Joey, and their other friends smiling at her. They were in the living room, which was covered in birthday decorations, and Alex could see that the coffee table was full of gifts for her as well as a birthday cake and other snacks and drinks. Alex felt herself getting emotional and replied,

“You guys…”

Alex was trying to hold back from crying, and immediately worried, Yugi approached her and asked,

“Alex, are you ok? Is this too much?”

Immediately, Alex shook her head and replied, “No, that’s not it. It’s just that no one has ever gone through all this trouble for me.”

Joey grinned and replied, “Hey, you deserve it, and your birthday only comes around once a year.”

Tea smiled and added, “That’s right.”

Alex replied, “Thanks, everyone.”

Duke replied, “This is a party, so let’s do it!”

The group beginning to chat, and feeling the initial surprise wear off, Alex began to relax and have fun. She talked with the others and opened up her gifts and such. She was even surprised that Max made it, too. Curious, she approached him, and Max happily said,

“Happy birthday, Alex.”

Alex replied, “Thanks, Max. I’m surprised that Cas let you stay here, though.”

Max replied, “It is a special day, and besides, I’m not only here for you.”

He looked between Tea and Yugi, and taking the hint, Alex replied, “I see. Well, I hope you can help.”

Max grinned and replied, “I’ll do my best. Oh, and before I forget, this is my gift.”

Alex happily took the gift that Max gave her and after opening it and seeing what was inside, she said,

“Thanks. I love it. How are things going between you and her, by the way?”

Max blushed a bit and replied, “It’s been put on hold for now since Cas has been needing my help. But I’ll see her soon and I’ll tell her.”

Alex nodded and replied, “Good. I’m sorry that I’m not there to help you and Cas, but-”

Max shook his head and interrupted, “Don’t worry. We understand even though Cas still insists that things would go faster and more smoothly if you were with us. But she knows that you should live your own life and you deserve it.”

Alex smiled and replied, “I’m glad you both understand, and Cas knows she can contact me whenever she wants.”

Max replied, “That’s right.”

He looked around and added, “It looks like the others want to talk to you, too, so I won’t take up any more of your time. You have fun now.”

Alex laughed and replied, “I will.”

The two of them walked off in separate directions and a little later, Joey approached her. He smiled at her and said,

“Hey, Alex. Having fun?”

Alex nodded happily and replied, “I am. You guys are really great to do all this for me.”

Joey replied, “We were happy to, but I have to ask. You never had a birthday party before?”

Alex replied, “Only when I was really little, when my parents and Andy were with me. Of course, Cas tried giving me birthday parties after, but I just felt empty, so she stopped.”

Joey nodded and replied, “I get that. I hope this isn’t too much for ya. But you deserve it.”

Alex smiled and replied, “I’d usually feel overwhelmed, but this is wonderful, and I’m not saying that because of the gifts and the food.”

Joey laughed and replied, “Yeah, I know you’re not like that.”

Joey got quiet soon after, and feeling that something might be off, Alex asked,

“Are we good?”

Joey looked at Alex and nodding, he replied, “Yeah. Well, maybe I still have questions.”

Alex nodded and replied, “Of course. Ask me whatever you want, within reason, of course.”

Joey smiled and said, “Why didn’t ya tell me?”

Alex replied, “You’re going to have to be specific.”

Joey replied, “About who you really are.”

Alex smiled apologetically and replied, “It’s not like I wanted to hide it from you, but you would have been put in danger if I had told you.”

Joey replied, “But Yugi and moneybags knew, and Mokuba knows and Max, too.”

Alex sighed and replied, “There were extenuating circumstances, so Seto and Yugi had to find out. And Mokuba wasn’t supposed to, but he overheard me talking to Yugi. And then you already know the deal with Max.”

Joey nodded and replied, “Yeah. I never caught on that you and Max worked together.”

Alex replied, “He is one of the few people at the agency that I trust.”

Joey replied, “I can accept you being from the future, and I won’t tell anyone. But why moneybags?”

Alex smiled sadly and replied, “You do deserve an answer to that.”

She took a deep breath and then continued, “I hope you don’t think I was leading you on or anything. When I first came here, I felt like you and I had a connection. And you accepted me despite that I’m a freak.”

Joey replied, “Alex, you’re not a freak. If ya think that because other guys saw you that way, they’re dumb.”

Alex replied, “That’s what Seto says, too. But anyway, I didn’t intend to fall for him. You deserve to know that. Actually, he’d be the kind of guy I’d normally avoid. You know how I like living things simply and wanting to be as normal as possible.”

Joey nodded although he didn’t say anything. Alex continued, “But as I got to know him, I saw that there was a lot more to him, and he’s a complicated person. And then I had this feeling that there’s good in him. It’s just difficult to get that out of him because of his past and everything. We become the people that we are partially because of it. Then, before I realized what was happening, I fell for him. He would put in all this effort to make me happy, and I could tell that it wasn’t a trick. In his own way, he wanted me to like him or at least, to accept him. And as I told Seto, the heart wants what it wants. There was no going back after that.”

After Alex stopped talking, Joey was quiet for a couple of minutes. Alex looked concerned, wondering how Joey was taking in her words. Finally, he replied,

“I’ll tell it to ya straight. I don’t like moneybags, and I think ya know it’s because of past history. But I want you to be happy, and if you’re happy with him, then I’m with ya.”

Alex smiled softly and replied, “Thanks, Joey. You really are a great guy, and I guess it’s kind of spoilery for me to say this, but you’re going to find someone wonderful. And since I’m from the future, you know that it’s true.”

Joey laughed and replied, “Yup, I know. You’re a wonderful gal, Alex, and I only want the best for you.”

Alex nodded and she reached out to gently squeeze Joey’s hand. The two of them looked happily at each other for a minute, and then after letting go, Joey said,

“This party is for you, so I don’t want to take up all your time.”

Alex replied, “It’s fine, but you have a point. I’ll see you later.”

Alex and Joey parted ways, and Alex continued to talk with the others although they made sure not to take up too much of Alex’s time. As Alex made her way to Yugi, Yugi smiled at her and said,

“Hey, Alex. How do you like the surprise?”

Alex smiled and replied, “It’s wonderful. You guys are totally awesome to do this for me.”

Yugi replied, “We had fun organizing all this, and you deserve to have a wonderful day.”

Alex replied, “It’s great to relax and have fun. I’m happy things are getting back to normal.”

Yugi nodded and then he said, “Oh, yeah. He wants to talk to you, too.”

Before Alex could say anything, Yami appeared in front of Alex. He smiled at her and said,

“Happy birthday, Alex.”

Alex smiled softly and replied, “Thanks.”

Yami took out a small gift wrapped box and handing it to Alex, he said, “I got you something, too. It’s more like I made it.”

Alex nodded and she unwrapped the gift. Inside the box, there was a cute bracelet that had Egyptian carvings on it. She looked happily at Yami and said,

“Thank you. You really made this yourself? It looks professional.”

Yami laughed and replied, “I may have had Yugi help me to look some things up, but I did.”

Alex replied, “It’s great.”

Yami nodded and then he said, “I’m a little surprised that Kaiba didn’t insist on accompanying you.”

Alex laughed and replied, “Same, but he is dedicated to his work. Besides, he told me that he wants to celebrate with just me later.”

Yami replied, “That makes sense.”

He looked thoughtful and then said, “So I heard that you plan on staying here.”

Alex nodded and replied, “You heard right. I know some people are surprised by my decision.”

Yami replied, “I was, too, at first. You seem like the kind of person who would choose to take care of responsibilities.”

Alex replied, “I am, usually. But if I’m to be honest, after everything that happened, I’m very tired. Besides, Cas can take care of things.”

Yami replied, “I understand, but it’s not just that.”

Alex looked questioningly at Yami until Yami added, “I’m surprised you chose to stay after what Cas told you.”

Alex realized what Yami was referring to, and she replied, “Oh, you mean about me supposedly being an important duelist in my time?”

Yami nodded and replied, “Correct, and I have to agree, especially after watching you duel.”

Alex shrugged and replied, “Perhaps, but I don’t think of myself like that. Even if I’m supposed to be the top duelist of my time, then that means that Cas broke the rule.”

Yami looked confused, and Alex clarified,

“I told Seto that there are rules to recruiting time agents, and the most important rule is that someone who is crucial to their time period cannot be recruited.”

Yami nodded in understanding and replied, “So you should not have been an agent in the first place?”

Alex nodded and replied, “That is correct. But I can see why Cas didn’t stop it. She knows how stubborn I can be, and I guess, in spite of some hiccups, things worked out.”

Yami replied, “True, and we wouldn’t have met you, otherwise. It’s been a pleasure getting to know you.”

Alex smiled and replied, “Same here.”

Yami replied, “And you’ve brought out a side to Kaiba that I thought I’d never get to see.”

Alex replied, “Maybe. But you were the one who opened up that possibility after you two had your first duel.”

Yami replied, “But you made him whole again. At least, that’s how I see it.”

Alex smiled softly and replied, “I hope I’ve done some good, and I want to make Seto as happy as he’s made me feel.”

Yami smiled and replied, “I’m sure you two can do that for each other.”

Alex and Yami continued to talk for a little longer until the latter switched places with Yugi. Then the party continued for a while longer, and Alex had lots of fun, just getting to relax and spend the day with her friends.

As the day was ending, Mokuba noticed the time, and approaching Alex, he said,

“I don’t want the party to end, but we should be getting back. Seto will be finishing up work soon, and he wants to have you to himself.”

Alex laughed softly and replied, “I understand. I guess we should wrap things up here.”

Alex and Mokuba made their way to the others, and Alex thanked everyone for the party and presents. She turned to Max and said,

“Before I forget, could you pass a message on to Cas for me? I want to say thanks to her and the guys for the gifts.”

Max grinned and replied, “Will do.”

Yugi approached Alex and said, “I’m happy you had fun, Alex, and tell Kaiba that we said hi.”

Alex nodded and replied, “I will.”

She and Mokuba then gathered up Alex’s gifts and said their goodbyes to the others. Then they left the game shop, where Roland was waiting for them with the car. After they all got in and Roland began the drive back to the mansion, Alex said,

“That was so much fun.”

Mokuba grinned and replied, “I’m happy you had fun, but I hope you have some energy left for Seto.”

Alex gave a look and replied, “I’m going to hold back from reading too much into that comment, but I know that Seto wants to celebrate with me.”

Mokuba nodded and replied, “Good.”

The group soon arrived back at the mansion, and after getting out of the car, Alex and Mokuba held the gifts in their arms as they entered the mansion while Roland took care of parking the car. Once inside, a couple of maids helped Alex and Mokuba put away the gifts. Then Alex turned to Mokuba and said,

“Ok, what’s next?”

Mokuba replied, “I can’t spoil the surprise, but you should get changed into a dress.”

Alex nodded and replied, “Ahh, ok, I get it. What are you going to do?”

Mokuba replied, “I’ll go to my room and have dinner a little later. Seto will find you once you’re ready.”

Alex replied, “Ok.”

The two of them headed upstairs and went their separate ways. Alex went to get changed out of her clothes and then into a beautiful, pale blue dress that went down to her knees. She touched up her make up as well and brushed her hair. After briefly looking at herself in the mirror, Alex left the room, wondering what to do next. However, she didn’t have to wait for long, as Kaiba approached her. He looked especially handsome, wearing a black tux and holding out a bouquet of red roses. Kaiba kissed her and said,

“Welcome home. You look beautiful as always.”

Alex blushed and replied, “Thanks, Seto.”

Kaiba smiled and handed her the bouquet, which Alex happily accepted. He commented,

“It is your birthday, so I’m allowed to spoil you as much as I want.”

At that, Alex laughed and replied, “Good point.”

Kaiba then held her left hand and said, “I cooked dinner for us. I thought about taking you out to eat, but I thought this would be better.”

Alex nodded happily and replied, “Totally, and I like your cooking. I can’t wait to see what you made.”

Kaiba nodded and he led the way down the stairs and to the dining room. On the table, there was a simple, but beautiful spread of food laid out for two people. Kaiba held out a chair for Alex and then took the bouquet, commenting that he would put it in a vase. Once that was done, he took a seat across from Alex and the two of them gazed lovingly at each other for a few moments. Kaiba then asked,

“How was your day? Did you have fun with Mokuba and the dweebs?”

Alex smiled and replied, “Yes, I had lots of fun. I feel like I may be getting spoiled.”

Kaiba replied, “I’m sure everyone else has already said it, but you deserve to be spoiled.”

Alex nodded and replied, “I missed you, though.”

Kaiba replied, “As did I, but we’re together now.”

Alex happily replied, “That’s right.”

She reached out to touch Kaiba’s hand and Kaiba smiled at her. He then said,

“Let’s eat. Of course, I have gifts for you, too, but you’re going to have to be patient.”

Alex laughed and replied, “Ok.”

She looked thoughtful and added, “You’re different from Mokuba in that way. He insisted on opening gifts first and then eating.”

Kaiba shook his head and replied, “I’m not surprised. He’s always like that.”

Alex nodded and then she and Kaiba began to eat while they talked. Alex felt happy that today had been lots of fun and now she was getting to spend time with the man she loved and adored. Of course, there were still moments of sadness for her whenever she thought about Andy, but she promised to try to be happy and to move on.

After the couple finished dinner and dessert, Kaiba got up and said,

“Now I’m getting your gifts. Wait here.”

Alex nodded, and Kaiba left the room. He returned a few minutes later and then handed one gift-wrapped box to Alex. He said,

“Open this first.”

Alex unwrapped the gift and inside, there were a pair of beautiful diamond earrings. They were of a simple cut, and smiling, Alex said,

“They’re beautiful, Seto. Thank you.”

She then went ahead and put on the earrings. Then she asked, “How do I look?”

Kaiba replied, “Those diamonds look dull in comparison to you.”

Alex blushed and replied, “You’re such a flirt.”

Kaiba smirked and replied, “I’m simply being honest.”

He then approached Alex until he was right next to her and he was down on one knee. Then he held out a small box and opening it, a beautiful diamond ring was inside. Kaiba smiled softly at her and said,

“I would say that this is to match the earrings, and that is true. But I think you know what this is.”

Alex blushed deeply and nodding shyly, she replied, “I think so, but you’re going to have to say it to make it official.”

Kaiba took a breath and after a moment, he said,

“I love you, Alex. I know that things haven’t been easy for us and we may continue to have our share of troubles. But I know what I want, and I want you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, and I hope that’s what you want, too. Will you do me the honor of marrying me?”

Alex nodded happily and replied, “Yes, of course. I love you, too, Seto, and I want nothing more than to be with you always.”

Kaiba smiled, and he put the ring on Alex’s ring finger. He then got up, lifted her in his arms and kissed her passionately, pouring all of his love for her. Alex happily returned the kiss, and the two of them stayed like that for some time.

The two of them celebrated their engagement by spending the rest of the evening with each other, as they rotated between dancing and cuddling.

As the night was getting late, the couple returned to their room, getting ready for sleep. After they both washed up and changed into sleepwear, they climbed into bed and held onto each other. Kaiba kissed Alex and then said,

“I’m happy and I’m the luckiest man ever.”

Alex nodded happily and replied, “And I’m the luckiest woman ever. This has been the best birthday ever.”

Kaiba replied, “I’m happy it’s been wonderful, and I got a present, too, you know.”

Alex looked questioningly at Kaiba, and Kaiba added, “Your hand in marriage, of course.”

Alex blushed deeply and replied, “You won my heart a long time ago, so of course, I’d say yes. I know I’ll be happy with you forever.”

Kaiba smiled, and he leaned in to give Alex a sweet good night kiss. Then the two of them fell asleep in each other’s arms with smiles on both of their faces.

Meanwhile, back in Alex’s hometown, it was nighttime and there was some disturbance. There were brief flashes of light, and once the flashes were gone, they were replaced by people. These were the people who, like Andy, had vanished into the void, and among one of these people, there was a young boy who looked to be about Mokuba’s age. He was unconscious but only for a moment. After he came to, he looked around his surroundings. They were slightly familiar to him, but he was looking for someone. Feeling panicked, he could only call out,

“Alex! Where are you?”

Chapter 65

It was a week after Alex’s birthday, and Alex never felt happier. Of course, she was happy because she was now engaged to Kaiba and looking forward to spending her life with him. However, also, earlier in the day, Kaiba made a public announcement to the press about the latest duel disks by Kaiba Corporation. Alex and Yugi finished the project, and Kaiba was pleased with the final results. As Kaiba made his announcement, he thanked everyone who worked on the project, especially putting Alex and Yugi in the spotlight. As Alex guessed, Tea couldn’t help paying attention to Yugi, and Yugi smiled and blushed. Alex gave a silent thumbs up to him and mouthed,

“Told you so.”

Now it was Friday evening, and Alex and Kaiba were relaxing in their room along with their pets. They were just talking, cuddling, and having fun. Kaiba looked at Alex and said,

“I know I already said it, but great work on the duel disks.”

Alex smiled softly and replied, “I’m happy you got me to help, and they’ll be a major improvement. Also, they’re much more secure.”

Kaiba nodded and replied, “I trust you.”

As he held Alex in his arms, he asked, “Are you happy?”

Alex was surprised by the question and nodding, she replied, “Of course I am. I mean, not everything worked out, but I’m happy with where I am. I have friends and a wonderful fiance. I’m looking forward to our future together.”

She gazed fondly at Kaiba, and Kaiba leaned in to give Alex a sweet kiss on the lips. They would have stayed like that for longer when their puppy started to bark, wanting attention. So they broke off the kiss, and laughing, Alex said,

“Awww, he’s feeling lonely. Come here, little Seto.”

She gestured the puppy, whom Alex called “little Seto,” to come towards her and once he was within touching distance, he was on his back and Alex gave him a loving tummy rub. Kaiba replied,

“I can’t believe you named him after me.”

Alex smiled playfully and replied, “He needed a name, and turnabout is only fair, after all. You named our kitty after me.”

The kitty walked towards Kaiba, and Kaiba gave her a loving head pat. Kaiba smirked and replied,

“She reminds me of you.”

Alex shook her head, and she and Kaiba continued to give their pets some loving attention. As they were enjoying their happiness and peace, though, there was a sudden beeping nearby. Alex commented,

“That must be Cas. I wonder what’s going on.”

Kaiba nodded, and he took out the communication device that Alex had given him, remembering how to use it. Once it was active, Cas’ projection appeared before them. Alex asked,

“Cas, is everything ok?”

Cas replied, “Sort of. I, uhh, had to talk to you although I should have brought this up sooner. But I didn’t know how.”

Kaiba replied, “Just tell us.”

Cas was about to say something when suddenly, another image appeared. Alex was shocked to see a young boy who looked very familiar to her. She didn’t want to get her hopes up, though, so after taking a deep breath, she said,

“Is that you, Andy?”

The boy nodded frantically and replied, “It’s me, Alex! You look older, but I know it’s you. What’s going on? She tried to explain to me, but I don’t understand.”

He looked towards Cas, and Cas was trying to calm down Andy but to no avail. Andy looked at Alex and asked,

“Why aren’t you here? And where are you?”

Alex was at a loss for words, and as Kaiba looked at her, he could only imagine how shocked she must be. Thinking it best to take control of the situation, Kaiba looked at Cas and said,

“Tell us everything from the beginning.”

Cas nodded, and she gestured for one of the agents to take Andy to another room. Although Andy refused to at first, he only agreed after Alex told him that they would talk again later, making a promise to him.

After it was just Alex, Kaiba, and Cas, Cas said,

“I don’t know how it happened, but Andy and all the others who disappeared into that void returned. This was about a week ago.”

Alex asked, “So this happened on my birthday?”

Cas nodded and replied, “That’s right. I’ve been trying to figure out things here as well as do my best to explain things to your brother, but all he wants is for you to be with him. He doesn’t understand why you’re not here.”

Alex replied, “What does Andy remember?”

Cas replied, “That’s the weird thing. I asked him, and the last thing he remembers is being pulled apart from you and then seeing darkness. Then the next thing he noticed, he woke up right where he and the others disappeared.”

Kaiba asked, “He doesn’t remember anything about that duel with Hades?”

Cas replied, “Correct. That’s what baffles me as well as how he and the others returned. I’ve been looking into it, as I said, but I’ve come up empty and I’ve had my hands full trying to look after Andy.”

Alex looked troubled, wondering what to say or do, when Hades suddenly appeared from Alex’s deck. He looked at Alex and said,

“I can explain.”

Alex looked curiously at Hades but nodded, waiting patiently. Hades continued, “During our talk after our duel, I saw that look in your eyes. Even though I feel that my reasons were justified, I couldn’t bear to see your sadness. So I wanted to make things up to you. With my powers alone, it wouldn’t have been possible, but I asked my brothers and sisters for help. Together, we were able to bring back your brother and everyone else.”

Alex took her time to process Hades’ words and understanding, she asked,

“So you and the others were able to bring back Andy for me?”

Hades replied, “It was the least I could do. I apologize if I only made things more complicated.”

Alex shook her head and smiling sadly, she replied, “You all did what I thought was impossible. Thank you.”

She paused and then asked, “Do you know the cause of that void in the first place?”

Hades shook his head and replied, “I’m afraid not, Alex. Our powers are only able to fix what should never have occurred.”

Cas added, “That void wasn’t a natural cause of events. You and Andy should have had a normal life.”

Alex nodded although she didn’t know what to say. Cas looked at her and continued,

“If you come back here, you can investigate it and figure out the cause. Of course, you’d get to be with Andy, too.”

Before Alex could reply, Kaiba said, “Can’t you simply teleport him here? I want Alex and her brother to be together again, but…”

He looked at Alex, and Alex looked back at him, understanding what he wanted to say. Cas smiled sadly and replied,

“It’s not that simple. As you witnessed, Andy’s quite traumatized, so it would be dangerous to teleport someone in his condition. Also, there’s a reason that only certain people have been allowed to do so.”

Alex looked questioningly at Cas and replied, “What do you mean?”

Cas sighed and replied, “Time agents are allowed to teleport freely, but as you know, they have to pass certain tests before they’re allowed to be trained as agents. Those tests are meant to be rigorous, to the point of being impossible. So you can only imagine how surprised I was at the time that you passed them.”

Alex sadly replied, “I would have done anything to get Andy back.”

Cas quietly replied, “I know. Getting back on topic, if someone passes those tests, that means that they have the physical, mental, and emotional strength to freely travel through different time periods. Someone who’s unstable in any of those areas wouldn’t be allowed to time travel. It would be a danger to their health to the point where their bodies wouldn’t be able to survive the jump.”

Alex asked, “So because Andy wants me back so badly but his condition is unstable, he can’t just come here?”

Cas nodded in reply. Kaiba asked, “But what about those duelists?”

Of course, Kaiba was referring to Jaden and the others. Cas replied, “That’s a bit of a different situation, but duelists with strong dueling energy can also freely travel between different time periods. We’ve never been able to figure out exactly how that’s possible. It’s been an ongoing research topic.”

Cas added, “Since Andy isn’t an important duelist and he would most likely not pass the tests here, he won’t be able to time travel.”

Alex nodded and replied, “I get it.”

Cas replied, “I’m sorry. At least, I had to tell you about him. I don’t know what you want to do, but whatever you decide, know that I’ll support and help you as best I can.”

Alex replied, “Thanks, Cas.”

She took a breath and then said, “I think Seto and I need to talk alone for a while. We’ll contact you when I’ve decided what to do.”

Cas replied, “Of course. Take care of each other, and I’ll pick up your call when you’re ready.”

Cas’ projection then disappeared, and Alex sighed sadly to herself. Kaiba looked at her and gently asked,

“What do you want to do?”

Alex looked sadly at Kaiba and replied, “Ideally, I would like Andy to come here to live with us. I know it’d be a huge adjustment for him, and I’d have a lot of explaining to do, but I think I could get him to come around. But as Cas said, that isn’t a possibility.”

Kaiba replied, “For now.”

Alex looked questioningly at Kaiba, and Kaiba added, “I believe, with time, Andy would be able to come here. Right now, he’s scared and he wants you with him. I understand. He reminds me of Mokuba.”

Alex smiled sadly and replied, “I can see the resemblance.”

Kaiba replied, “Once he’s calmed down and had time to adjust, he could come here. I know what she said, but as we know, the future can always change. It has already changed.”

Hades added, “He’s right, Alex. Sorry if I’m interfering. I just wanted to make sure that you’ll be ok.”

Alex nodded and replied, “I will be. Thank you for bringing Andy back to me. You can go back to the others. Seto and I need to talk this out alone.”

Hades replied, “I understand. Please call for me if you need me.”

He then disappeared back into Alex’s deck. Kaiba then said, “Andy could end up becoming an important duelist or he could even pass those tests, like she said. After all, you were able to, and she didn’t think it was possible.”

Alex replied, “True, but after what I learned last time, I don’t know if it’s because I have the strength to do so or if it’s because I’m supposed to be an important duelist in my time.”

Kaiba replied, “It could be both. He is your brother, so I’m sure he could do whatever he must to be with you.”

He paused and then added, “But I saw him, and it’s obvious that he needs you.”

He reached out to hold Alex’s left hand and looked at her ring finger, which had her engagement ring. Kaiba said,

“I don’t want to let you go, but maybe, for now, you should go back to him.”

Alex wasn’t sure if she heard correctly, and she was silent for a minute. She needed to process Kaiba’s words, and once she did, she replied,

“But what about you? I don’t want to be apart from you, especially after we’ve both finally found our happiness.”

Kaiba smiled sadly at her and replied, “I know. I don’t want to let you go, but I love you, so I have to do what’s best for you. You go back to your brother and be with him. Then when he’s ready, the two of you can return here. I’ll wait for you.”

Alex replied, “I don’t know. It’s not that I don’t want to be with Andy, but what if it takes a long time?”

Kaiba replied, “I know that’s a possibility, but I don’t want to keep you apart from him. Besides, we can continue to communicate with each other.”

He motioned towards the communication device in his hand, and nodding, Alex replied,

“That’s right. Since Cas is in charge, she probably won’t mind if we keep in contact. As you’ve seen, she isn’t sticking to those rules like her superiors did. She knows that it only caused problems.”

Kaiba nodded and replied, “I know you’ll return to me. We are engaged, after all. All I would say is to not keep me waiting for too long.”

He let out a tiny smirk and smiling, Alex replied, “Of course. As soon as Andy would be able to make the time jump, we’ll both be here.”

She hugged Kaiba, feeling grateful but sad at the same time. He hugged her back, and even their pets could sense that something was wrong, as they both snuggled close to the couple. Alex was trying her best not to cry but a couple of tears trailed down her cheeks. Kaiba looked at her face and gently said,

“Don’t cry. We’ll only be apart for a short time. I know you. You won’t keep me waiting. Besides, I was planning on us having a long engagement. I wanted to wait until you’re 18, at least.”

Alex smiled and nodding, she replied, “I understand. It would cause less controversy if I’m an adult.”

Kaiba nodded and replied, “I love you, Alex. You completed what was missing in me, so I know you’ll return.”

Alex smiled softly, and Kaiba leaned in to give her a soft, loving kiss, as though they were sealing a promise to be together always and to always return to each other.

A week later, Alex and Kaiba, along with Mokuba, Yugi, and Joey, were in Alex’s apartment. All the other arrangements to take care of Alex’s transport back to the time agency were taken care of. The principal at Domino High had received an official email from Alex’s “home school” that she would transfer back to finish up the year, and Alex had already said her goodbyes to Tea and the others. Of course, Kaiba, Yugi, Joey, and Mokuba knew the truth, so they were now in Alex’s apartment, where they would say their goodbyes before Cas would teleport Alex. Most of Alex’s belongings had been packed and moved to the agency, with Cas and Max helping.

Now, Alex only had a carry-on bag, and she was looking sadly at everyone. Joey looked at her and said,

“Hey! Cheer up. Ya gonna be with Andy again. I know if Serenity and I were separated, I’d had done anything to be with her again.”

Alex nodded and replied, “I know. I am happy that I’ll be with him again, but I wish it didn’t have to come at a high cost.”

Yugi replied, “We understand, but you’ll stay in contact with Kaiba and eventually come back, right?”

Alex replied, “Of course. I’ll return with Andy as soon as I can.”

Mokuba rushed towards Alex and hugging her, he said, “I wish you didn’t have to go.”

Alex smiled sadly at Mokuba and replied, “Me, too, but I’m going to be back before you know it, and you’ll keep up with your dueling, right?”

Mokuba replied, “Definitely. I want to have another duel with you.”

Alex replied, “You bet.”

Kaiba looked at the others and taking the hint, Yugi said,

“Ok, everyone. Let’s give Alex and Kaiba a few minutes alone.”

Mokuba let go of Alex, and he and Joey followed Yugi as they left Alex’s apartment and went downstairs to wait for Kaiba outside Alex’s apartment building.

Once Alex and Kaiba were alone, Kaiba approached Alex and wrapped his arms around her waist. He gazed deeply into her eyes and leaned in to give her a passionate kiss on the lips, which she returned just as passionately. After their kiss ended, Kaiba said,

“I agree with Mokuba. I wish you didn’t have to go, either, even though I was the one who encouraged you to.”

Alex nodded and replied, “I want to stay, but I know Andy needs me. But I’m going to help him and do everything I can to return to you and the others as soon as I can.”

Kaiba smiled and replied, “I know. You won’t keep me waiting. We are engaged, after all, and when you get back, we’ll have the most wonderful wedding that’ll make everyone envious.”

Alex laughed and replied, “I look forward to it.”

She calmed down and looking a bit serious, she then said, “I probably don’t need to say it, but please look after Mokuba and our little ones.”

Kaiba replied, “I will. We’ll all be waiting for you and Andy.”

A soft, white light appeared behind Alex, and sighing, Alex noticed it and said, “I guess it’s time. Oh, one more thing.”

She reached into her pocket and handed Kaiba a dueling card. Kaiba widened his eyes in surprise at seeing the card in his hands and asked,

“Are you sure? It’s your phoenix.”

Alex nodded and smiling, she replied, “I am. It’ll protect you. Hold onto it for me, and after I leave, make sure to read the back.”

Kaiba nodded, and he leaned in to give Alex a goodbye kiss, making it last for as long as possible. After their lips parted, Kaiba took a deep breath and said,

“You should go. Andy is waiting for you.”

Alex nodded, and Kaiba finally let go of Alex. She picked up her bag and after giving Kaiba one last, loving look, she passed through the light and her form soon vanished along with the light. Once Kaiba could no longer see Alex, he took in breaths, doing his best to hold back from getting emotional. He already missed Alex but knew that she wouldn’t keep him waiting.

Once he collected himself, Kaiba left Alex’s apartment, making sure to lock it with the spare key that Alex gave him. As he left the building to meet up with the others, he looked at the back of Alex’s phoenix card. There was a bit of writing, which made Kaiba laugh.

After he was outside where Mokuba and the others were, the group was looking at him curiously, wondering why Kaiba was laughing. Joey commented,

“I understand you must be broken up over Alex, but she’s gonna be back.”

Kaiba stopped laughing and giving him a sarcastic look, he replied, “You really are an idiot, Wheeler.”

Joey was about to argue when Yugi said, “Calm down, Joey.”

Curiously, Mokuba looked at the card that Kaiba was holding and asked, “What’s that, Seto?”

Kaiba showed the card to Mokuba and said, “Alex gave it to me.”

Mokuba’s eyes widened as he realized it was Alex’s celestial phoenix and then after looking at what was written on the back, he laughed. Yugi looked at him and asked,

“What is it?”

Mokuba showed the back of the card to Yugi and Joey, which said,

I’ll be back for this.

Epilogue

Four years later…

Alex sighed sadly to herself as she sat at the dining table in her apartment back in her hometown. Her breakfast was untouched, and she had this forlorn look on her face. Sitting across from her, there was a boy in his late teens with short brown hair and green eyes. He frowned at her and said,

“Geez, sis. You have no reason to sigh like that.”

Alex looked at the boy, who, of course, was Andy. Shortly after Alex returned to the time agency, she saw Andy and there was a happy, tearful reunion between the siblings. After many hugs, Alex talked to him, explaining everything that happened. The two of them ended up getting an apartment together, and after Andy’s recovery, they went on many adventures together. Despite that events wouldn’t have normally occurred as they should, Andy ended up becoming a very powerful duelist although he still wasn’t able to defeat Alex. In addition, Alex continued to communicate regularly with Kaiba. Although it was easy to do so at first, since Cas didn’t prohibit the couple, it became more difficult as time passed. On Alex’s end, troubles popped up at the time agency that needed to be taken care of, and there were major catastrophes in her time that Alex, Max, and a few other powerful duelists needed to deal with. As for Kaiba, he had his own share of troubles although it looked like the worst was over for both of them.

Alex looked at Andy and said, “I know. I should be grateful that there’s no more trouble, but…”

She looked at her engagement ring, which she kept ever since Kaiba put it on her. Not once did she ever remove it. There were many times she wanted to return to him, but either there was some trouble that needed to be squashed or Cas would say that it wasn’t the right time. Alex disliked keeping Kaiba waiting, and she missed him terribly.

Andy shook his head and said, “I don’t get what you see in him, especially when there are plenty of other guys here who would be more than happy to win you over.”

Alex smiled sadly at Andy and replied, “I understand, but there’s no one else. I’ll only love Seto forever, even if he has decided to move on.”

Andy replied, “You don’t know that he has. Just because you two haven’t talked in a long while doesn’t mean-”

Alex interrupted, “I get what you’re saying, but if I were him, I wouldn’t blame him for wanting to move onto someone else. He deserves to be happy, and we are from different time periods, after all.”

Andy replied, “I don’t know him, but from what you told me and what I learned about him, he doesn’t seem to be the type. Once he wants something, he won’t let it go. So he’s waiting for you.”

Alex looked at Andy again and smiling a bit, she replied, “Thanks, Andy. I hope I’ll see him soon.”

Andy nodded and replied, “You will.”

He paused and then continued, “Now you need to eat up. We have to get going.”

Alex looked curiously at Andy and asked, “Where, and why?”

Andy gave a look and replied, “Today’s your birthday, or did you forget again?”

Alex laughed a bit and replied, “I suppose I did. Birthdays don’t seem to be too important since…”

She trailed off, remembering that one special birthday she celebrated with Kaiba and her friends. It was a precious day, and one that she would treasure always.

Andy sighed and replied, “Ok, ok, I get it. But you’re turning 21 today, and you know what that means?”

Alex replied, “I can legally drink now?”

Andy grinned and replied, “Totally, but I think it’s more fun to drink when it’s illegal to do so.”

Alex gave a look and replied, “Andy…”

Andy laughed and replied, “But seriously, it’s a special day, and Cas is throwing a party for you at the agency.”

She smiled and replied, “Well, we shouldn’t keep her waiting. I’m sure Cas went through a lot of trouble.”

Andy nodded, and the two siblings soon finished their breakfast and cleaned up afterwards. Then Alex activated the mobile teleporter that would take them to the time agency, and once they arrived, Alex immediately noticed that the place was dark. Guessing what was going on, she smiled and said,

“Ok, we’re here.”

The lights were turned on, followed by shouts of “Happy Birthday!” Alex looked around the room and saw that it was full of birthday decorations as well as lots of food, including a huge birthday cake, flutes of champagne and non-alcoholic drinks, and a huge stack of presents. Cas, Max, and the other employees at the time agency were dressed up and grinning at Alex.

Max approached Alex with his birthday gift in hand and said, “We should know better by now. We can’t surprise you.”

Alex replied, “True, but it doesn’t hurt that Andy gave me a heads up.”

Cas looked at Andy, who simply shrugged his shoulders. Alex then said, “You guys are sweet to throw me a party.”

Max replied, “21 is a special age. If only I could be young again.”

Alex replied, “You’re not that much older than me, Max.”

Max laughed and replied, “True enough.”

Cas approached Alex and said, “I know how you feel about parties, but this is a very special occasion.”

Alex replied, “Because I’m officially 21?”

Cas looked slyly at Alex and replied, “That’s not the only reason, but before you ask, enjoy the party and gifts. You’ll find out later.”

Alex nodded, doing as Cas suggested. She talked to many people, ate some food and cake, and opened her presents. Meanwhile, Cas, Andy, and Max were talking quietly among themselves, preparing a very special surprise for Alex.

As the party was winding down and guests were leaving, Cas, Max, and Andy approached Alex. Cas said,

“I hope you had fun.”

Alex nodded happily and replied, “Definitely. This was a great way to celebrate my birthday.”

Max replied, “It’s not over yet.”

Alex replied, “What do you mean?”

Andy grinned and said, “Follow us. We have one more surprise for you.”

Alex replied, “I’m not sure how many more surprises I can take, but ok.”

She followed the others as they led her towards another room. Once they arrived, Alex realized the room they were in and saw that the teleporter that would transport time agents to various time periods was active. Through the teleporter, Alex saw her old apartment back in Domino City, which looked to be newly furnished along with other items that were moved there. Realizing what this most likely meant, she looked at Cas and the others and said,

“Does this mean you’re giving the ok now?”

Cas smiled and replied, “That’s right. I’m sorry it took so long. I know you were originally meant to stay long enough to help Andy, but then all those problems kept happening.”

Alex shook her head and replied, “It’s not your fault, and I would have helped, regardless. I just feel bad that I’ve kept him waiting.”

Max replied, “Well, you know what they say. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”

Alex smiled and replied, “I guess that’s true.”

Realizing something, she asked, “Does this mean Andy can come with me?”

Andy gave a thumbs up and replied, “That’s right. Besides all those problems Cas mentioned, I’ve been training to become a time agent.”

Cas nodded and added, “And Andy recently became one.”

Although Alex felt touched that Andy went through the trouble, she couldn’t help but worry and replied,

“But are you sure? You know the dangers that go along with being an agent.”

Andy nodded and replied, “Cas explained everything to me. I wanted to do this as extra insurance. I know that it should be ok for me to time travel because I’m an awesome duelist like you, but I wanted a backup plan.”

Alex laughed and replied, “I see.”

Cas explained, “Of course, I’ll only call Andy for help if it’s absolutely necessary. As far as I can tell, all the really dangerous events that threaten time periods have been taken care of.”

Max added, “Also, that means I can finally go back to her.”

Alex smiled softly and replied, “I’m sure Skye has missed you very much. Please tell her I say hi, and Yusaku, too. I hope everyone is doing well.”

Max smiled and replied, “Me, too, and I’ll pass along your message.”

Andy then said, “We can go through the teleporter whenever you’re ready. All our belongings are at your old place, and Cas will teleport anything else that we may have missed.”

Alex nodded, but before she could say or do anything, she suddenly felt nervous. Sensing that something was off, Cas gently asked,

“What’s wrong?”

Alex replied, “What if he has moved on? I wouldn’t blame him if he did.”

Andy sighed and replied, “We already talked about this, sis. He hasn’t, but he doesn’t know that we’re coming, so you can surprise him. But in case he has, I’ll beat him up for you.”

Alex shook her head and laughing, she replied, “When you put it like that, I have no reason to be afraid.”

Andy grinned and replied, “That’s my sis.”

The two siblings looked happily at each other, and then they gave their goodbyes to Cas and Max. Then they walked through the teleporter that would take them back to Domino.

Meanwhile, Kaiba was furiously working on his laptop in his office at Kaiba Corp. As he hadn’t heard from Alex in a long while but didn’t wish to dwell on her absence, he decided to keep himself busy with work. Mokuba was worried about him, and he kept assuring Kaiba that Alex would talk to him as soon as she could. However, Kaiba would simply grunt and keep himself engrossed with work.

As Kaiba was working, the door to his office was suddenly flung open and Mokuba hurriedly ran inside. Kaiba looked up from his laptop screen and said,

“What’s wrong with you, Mokuba? Can’t you see that I’m busy?”

Mokuba rolled his eyes and replied, “Duel academy can wait, but this is important.”

Kaiba turned his eyes back to the screen and replied, “I need to get back to this. There have been enough delays as it is.”

Mokuba couldn’t help but let out a small smile and said,

“I understand. If you’d rather not see Alex, I’ll just have to say hi to her-”

Suddenly, Kaiba got up from his chair before Mokuba could finish his words and replied,

“You should have said so immediately.”

Kaiba rushed out of the office and as he passed by his secretary’s desk, without looking at her, he said,

“Cancel all my appointments for the rest of the day.”

The secretary was surprised and replied, “But-”

As Mokuba followed Kaiba closely behind, he turned to her and said, “Something very important has come up. Just reschedule everything.”

As Kaiba and Mokuba made their way inside the elevator, heading downstairs to the ground floor and leaving the building, the secretary could only look on, flabbergasted.

Alex and Andy were busy settling into Alex’s old apartment. As they were taking a break from unpacking, Andy said,

“I don’t see the point. We’re going to see Kaiba, and he’ll probably want to marry you right away.”

Alex smiled a bit and replied, “Maybe, but I don’t want to rush him. Besides, it’s nice getting settled in. It’s like the first time I was here.”

Andy nodded and replied, “I guess I can understand.”

He took a breath and then continued, “I’m going outside for some fresh air, but I’ll be back soon. You’re going to be ok?”

Alex nodded and replied, “I’ll be fine.”

Andy smiled and then left the apartment, going downstairs and then out of the building. He took a deep breath and looked at Domino for the first time. It was like any other city to him, but since Alex thought it was special, he wanted to find out what she saw in it.

As he was contemplating, suddenly, Andy noticed a red ferrari racing towards the apartment building. For a moment, Andy thought that the car would crash straight into him, but fortunately, it stopped a few feet from him. Then he saw two figures exit the car and recognizing them, Andy looked shocked.

Meanwhile, Kaiba and Mokuba had reached the building to Alex’s old apartment and after getting out of Kaiba’s ferrari, they immediately noticed Andy. Mokuba looked at him and said,

“You’re Andy, Alex’s brother?”

Recovering from shock, Andy nodded and replied, “Yeah, that’s right, and you must be Mokuba. Sis has told me about you two, but how did you know-?”

Before Andy could finish his question, Kaiba interrupted, “Where’s Alex? Tell me now.”

Andy gave a look and said, “It’s a pleasure to meet you, too. Sis is in our apartment. Well, I guess it’s her old apartment.”

Kaiba then hurried into the building before Andy could say anything more. Mokuba looked apologetically at Andy and said,

“Sorry about Seto. He’s been worried about Alex, and I’ll explain everything.”

Alex was standing on the balcony of her apartment, gazing at the sunset. She smiled softly to herself, thinking about how beautiful the city was and how much she missed it. She thought to herself,

It’s good to be back.

As Alex was absorbed in her thoughts, suddenly, she felt a pair of strong but familiar arms wrap around her waist. She took a deep breath and recognizing the scent, she knew it could only belong to one person. Alex turned around, facing her guest, and was about to say something when Kaiba held Alex closer to his chest and passionately kissed her on the lips. Surprised but happy, Alex returned the kiss, missing his love and warmth. She had missed Kaiba so much, and now they were making up for lost time.

The kiss lasted for a while, and after it ended, Kaiba looked at her and said,

“Four years! You kept me waiting for four years.”

Alex smiled apologetically at Kaiba and said,

“I’m sorry. I didn’t want to be away from you for so long. One problem after another kept coming up, and Cas needed me.”

Kaiba shook his head and replied, “Everyone else got to have you. And why didn’t you tell me when you’d come back?”

Alex replied, “Well, it was a surprise to me, too.”

Alex then explained about how Cas and the others threw an impromptu surprise for her, which resulted in Alex returning to Domino. After she finished talking, Kaiba said,

“At least, you’re finally back. I missed you.”

Alex smiled softly and replied, “I missed you, too, Seto.”

She gently caressed his cheek and leaned in to give him a sweet kiss. After their lips parted, Kaiba quickly scooped up Alex in his arms and began to hurry them out of the apartment. Surprised, Alex asked,

“What are you doing?”

Kaiba replied, “I’m not wasting any more time. We’re getting married right now.”

Alex widened her eyes and replied, “But what about announcing our engagement and the planning, not to mention that I’m only wearing a blouse and jeans?”

Kaiba replied, “You look perfect as always, and those other things don’t matter. We can have an official ceremony later, but I’m not going to spend another moment away from you.”

Alex blushed deeply but nodded, hanging onto Kaiba. Once the couple was out of the building, Kaiba walked quickly towards his ferrari. Andy and Mokuba, who had both been talking, saw the couple, and surprised by the scene, Andy asked,

“What’s going on?”

Kaiba looked at him and said, “I’m marrying Alex right now, and no one’s going to stop us.”

Andy looked shocked and replied, “What?”

Laughing, Mokuba replied, “That’s Seto for you.”

He grabbed Andy’s hand and said, “Let’s go. They’re going to need witnesses, and it’ll be easier if I explain.”

Wordlessly, Andy followed Mokuba as they got inside Kaiba’s ferrari as well. Once everyone was in the car, Kaiba stepped on the accelerator, heading towards the nearest public office to get married. While Mokuba was talking to Andy, Alex gazed at Kaiba, feeling a rush of emotions. Despite that Alex anticipated some calm, it looked like things were only going to get more exciting from here on out, and she was looking forward to the next adventure in her life, a lifetime to spend with the man she loved and adored.
