Lycoris nodded and after a few moments, she was finally able to calm down and stop crying. Wiping away her tears, she quietly asked,

"Is-is it possible to contact Nerine, too? I-I want to make sure she's ok."

The shapeshifter listened with interest as Alex told her of his story with both Nerine and Alex, and once he was done, she was silent for a few moments, thinking over everything he said. Finally, she said,

"I guess this was the eventual end of your relationship anyways. I never heard of a marriage with two wives, myself."

Ryan replied, "I suppose but if you're going to communicate with her, then I want to listen in.  It's just..."

As he knew how Nerine was, he didn't trust that Nerine would be civil towards Lycoris.

Alex sighed sadly and replied, "Yes, I-I suppose you're right.  It wasn't too much of my darling to want a divorce but still, Lycoris will always hold a special place in my heart."

Lycoris was a bit surprised as Ryan requested to listen in her conversation with Nerine but then remembered that Ryan didn't like Nerine very much. She sighed and replied,

"You-you don't like Nerine, do you?"

The shapeshifter was silent for a moment then replied,

"I heard her saying the same thing about you but you know that most likely, she's having a relationship with that human now, right?"

Ryan frowned and replied, "I have enough reasons not to like her so yeah, I want to make sure that she'll be civil towards you.  At least I think she can be if she knows that I'm listening."

Alex sighed again and replied, "It-it doesn't matter.  She has every right to pursue another relationship.  Unless some miracle were ever to happen, Lycoris and I could never be together again."

Lycoris frowned a bit, as she didn't like how Ryan thought of Nerine and wanted to listen in to their conversation, as though he didn't trust her. A bit of anger in her voice, she replied,

"Then no, thanks. Nerine-Nerine is my sister, Ryan, and I don't need anyone to protect me from her. She's my one and only sister who I will always love so much, no matter how she thinks of me. I-I don't need you to watch over our conversation together."

The shapeshifter nodded silently then said,

"Whatever. If she cares so much about you, then she should do her best to come and save you, not just talk."

Ryan sighed to himself, as he hadn't meant to anger Lycoris.  Deciding to concede, he replied,

"If it really means that much to you, I'll let you talk to her and you two can have your privacy."

Alex nodded and replied, "I-I guess."

Wanting to change the subject, he asked, "So what's going on?  The captain is still unconscious, right?"

Lycoris was a bit surprised that Ryan changed his mind so quickly and a smile escaped her lips. Hugging him gratefully, she said,

"Thanks, Ryan. You're the best."

The shapeshifter nodded and replied, "Yeah, he is but mother says he should wake up soon. His injuries are recovering."

Rubbing her forehead, she murmured, "I don't know what to do now. That human doesn't seem willing in the least to hand over the girl."

Ryan smiled softly and replied, "Anything for you, my angel."

He held Lycoris in his arms for a few moments and then said, "I'll take out my pendant and contact Sia.  Then she can patch you through to Nerine.  Will that be ok?"

Curiously, Alex looked at the shapeshifter and asked, "Do you have a backup plan, in that case?  I have to admit that Ryan is being pretty tenacious in refusing to let Lycoris go."

Lycoris nodded and replied, "Yes, that's fine, as long as I can talk to Nerine privately. I don't want her to hold back anything. I-I know she must be quite angry and I want her to let out her anger, if possible."

The shapeshifter groaned and after a few moments, she replied,

"Not really. If things go really bad, I'll have to search for the girl again myself, but then having you here would be pretty useless."

She paused then said, "But I am not letting you go. Even if having you remain here is pretty much useless, I won't comfort them by sending you back."

Ryan nodded and replied, "Ok, I understand."

He took out his pendant and called out, "Sia, are you there?"

Alex nodded and replied, "Yes, I understand.  But Lycoris might give herself up.  She did say that she would if that's what it takes to get me back to my darling safely.  But I'm sure that Ryan won't let her use such an option right away."

Back in the gods' world, Lisianthus was in her office, taking care of her usual work. She heard Ryan's message and happily replied,

"Hey, cutie. Yes, I'm here. How are you doing and how is Lycoris?"

The shapeshifter was thoughtful then suddenly getting an idea, she said,

"Well, if we make Lycoris believe that you're getting tortured here, just like we did with the human before, would that make her more willing to give herself up? It wouldn't be that easy but I am sure if we keep doing that for a time long enough, it will be enough to mess with her nerves."

Ryan smiled softly upon hearing Lisianthus' voice and replied,

"We're both doing better, thanks.  Are you busy, beautiful?  Lycoris is feeling better and wants to talk to Nerine for a few minutes to make sure that she's ok and everything."

Although Alex knew that he wouldn't really be tortured, he didn't like the idea of Lycoris' nerves being messed with.  However, saying so opening would arouse suspicion.  Getting an idea himself, he replied,

"That could work but I thought of something.  When Ryan contacts you again, you can demand that you talk to Lycoris alone and then perhaps you can make threats to her directly regarding my life?"

(Sorry for the delay. My mother called for me and all but I am here now. XD)

Lisianthus nodded in understanding and replied, "Oh sure, no problem. Hang on, eh? I'll get Nerine. She's probably in her room."

She got up to search for Nerine to allow Lycoris to talk to her.

The shapeshifter was thoughtful and replied, "Perhaps but I would need proof to go along with that and seemingly torturing you would be perfect, wouldn't it?"

(No problem.  XD)

Ryan waited patiently for Lisianthus to find Nerine and turning to Lycoris, he said,

"Once the two of you talk, I'll wait right outside and you can just call out for me when you're done, ok?"

Alex replied, "Perhaps but it wouldn't be necessary.  Ryan is very stubborn but Lycoris would be more likely to believe that something terrible was happening to me.  Maybe you can try threatening her first and if that doesn't work, then we can go with the torture approach?"

Lycoris nodded and replied, "Thanks, Ryan. I appreciate this a lot."

She smiled a bit to him gratefully. Meanwhile, Lisianthus finally reached Nerine and told her that Lycoris wished to talk to her. Nerine was glad to hear that, as she wished to give Lycoris a lesson for everything she's caused them. She gave her the pendant and then Nerine said,

"Here I am. What do you wish to say, Lycoris?"

Lycoris took a deep breath, feeling a bit nervous, but waited for Ryan to go outside first.

The shapeshifter was silent for a moment then asked,

"Are you worried about her? About how she could receive the news of you getting tortured?"

Ryan nodded and after giving Lycoris' hand one last squeeze, he left the room, shutting the door behind him so that Lycoris could hear it close.  He then waited in the hallway.

Alex nodded and replied, "I can't help it.  Lycoris is very fragile and delicate.  My darling is much stronger although she may not appear to be so."

After Ryan left and Lycoris was sure she was alone, she started talking to Nerine, wanting to make sure that she was ok. Of course, this was the chance that Nerine had been waiting for, to blame Lycoris severely for everything that happened, telling her that Alex was still in danger while she was hiding safely. She also promised her that if anything were to happen to him, Lycoris wouldn't survive her wrath.

Although her words hurt Lycoris deeply, she didn't blame Nerine, for she thought the latter was right about every word.

The shapeshifter was silent for a moment then sighing, she said,

"Fine, I'll go with your plan, but if things need be, you'll put aside your feelings and do as I say. As long as you're here with us, you're supposed to think of Lycoris as an enemy, and nothing else."

Outside the room, Ryan waited and could only imagine what horrible things Nerine was saying about Lycoris.  Although he could have found a way to eavesdrop on the conversation, Ryan respected Lycoris' privacy and hoped that she would tell him later.

Alex nodded and replied, "I understand."

He was grateful that the shapeshifter had decided to go along with his idea for now, as he didn't wish for Lycoris to suffer more than she already had.

Lycoris apologized to Nerine over and over, promising her that she would do everything she could to get Alex back safely to her. Nerine told her to just hand over herself, as that would end up solving everything. Lycoris promised her that she would do so if there were no other option.

They soon finished the conversation and although Lycoris wanted a break before having Ryan join her again, she knew he was waiting outside so she called for him so he could talk to Lisianthus.

The shapeshifter nodded and replied, "I should get going now but my mother will return soon to take you to the kitchen so you two could make that strawberry cake. Do you want anything until then?"

Ryan heard Lycoris call out for him and entering room, he approached her and gently asked,

"All done?"

Alex shook his head and replied, "No, I'll be fine.  Please tell your mother that I can't wait to bake that cake with her."

He gave the shapeshifter a small smile.

Lycoris nodded and silently handed the pendant to Ryan. Meanwhile, Lisianthus had taken her own pendant from Nerine and said,

"Cutie, Lycoris, you still there?"

The shapeshifter rolled her eyes and replied, "Whatever."

She then left the room without saying another word.

Ryan replied, "Yup, we're here, beautiful."

He paused and then asked, "Has there been any news?"

Alex couldn't help but smile to himself after the shapeshifter left the room.  Despite her cold demeanor, he could tell that she was a very kind person inside and that person simply needed to come out of hiding.

Lisianthus sighed and replied, "Not yet. The soldiers are almost done searching through the devils' world but they found nothing yet. I don't think the captain and his helpers are still there anywhere. We'll start searching in the gods' world next."

A little while later, there was a knock on the door and Lady Penelope entered the room. Smiling happily at Alex, she said,

"Hello, darling. How are you doing today?"

Ryan nodded and replied, "I see.  Well, at least we can eliminate the devils' world as their hiding place and there are only so many places that they can hide.  I know you'll find them, beautiful."

Alex returned Lady Penelope's smile and replied, "I'm good and I sure am looking forward to baking with you today, my lady.  Your daughter stopped by earlier and I was telling her how excited I am."

Lisianthus grinned confidently and replied, "Of course, cutie. It's only a matter of time. It won't be long before Alex is saved and the captain and his helpers are found and taught a lesson for messing with us."

Lady Penelope looked happy and replied,

"I am glad to hear that, dear. I'm looking forward to baking with you, too, darling. I thought the strawberry shortcake would be a perfect dessert to have with lunch, right?"
