Lycoris continued petting the puppies gently and smiling, she replied,

"They've been keeping me more than happy. Their company is something I am really grateful for."

She paused for a moment then said,

"Bryan and Rosaline will want them back soon, right?"

Ryan replied, "They're not in a hurry.  Rosaline's wrist is healing but it'll still be a while before it's completely functional.  I think they may not ask for them back until they return home so they'll be in your care for a while.  It's all right with you, right?"

Lycoris was happy to hear that Rosaline and Bryan were not in a hurry to get back the puppies and smiling, she replied,

"Of course. I'll be more than happy to keep the puppies for a while longer. I do enjoy their company a lot."

The puppies barked happily and snuggled closer to Lycoris.  Chuckling, Ryan replied,

"And it looks like they enjoy your company, too."

He reached out to pet the puppies, enjoying the break time.

Lycoris continued petting the puppies happily as well for some time, then she said,

"I'm all rested now. I am ready to continue our lesson whenever you are."

Ryan nodded and replied, "Sure, I'm ready to continue."

He waited for Lycoris to set the puppies back on the bench and then he escorted her to the middle of the training room.  Then he asked,

"So what would you like to do next?  Learn more new spells or practice the ones you already know?  We could try some one-on-one simulation combat."

Lycoris looked confused by the last thing Ryan said and asked curiously,

"What does that mean?"

Ryan smiled and replied, "Well, I was thinking that I could create some situations where you would use your spells in battle.  I guess you could call it a test to see if you know which spells to cast for certain problems and when to cast them.  For instance, if you detect a group of enemy soldiers coming towards you, what spell would be best to use against them?  That sort of thing."

Lycoris nodded and replied,

"I understand. Alright, I-I'd like that. It would feel like some sort of a test indeed that I could use to make sure that I know how to use the spells effectively."

Ryan nodded and replied, "All right.  I'll start off with a simple situation and see how you deal with it."

He then cast a spell which summoned an illusion of an enemy soldier with a sword in his right hand, ready for combat.  There were no other obstacles in place.  After Ryan was done, he turned to Lycoris and said,

"Ok, here's your first test.  Use your senses as best as you can and choose the best spells for this situation."

Lycoris took a deep breath and first cast a spell to detect the enemy's location and once she could feel its place, she cast another spell to summon a dark energy ball, and then shot it towards the enemy soldier.

The enemy soldier deflected Lycoris' dark energy balls, using his sword to send them flying towards the walls.

Meanwhile, Ryan looked on, making careful observations of how Lycoris was doing.

Lycoris could feel her energy balls getting deflected and had to think of another plan to get to her enemy, so thinking quickly of something, she cast the freeze spell to freeze her enemy then shot another dark energy ball towards it.

After the enemy soldier was frozen, it was hit with Lycoris' dark energy balls and then it was instantly destroyed.  Nodding in approval, Ryan commented,

"Very well done, Lycoris.  That didn't take long.  How do you feel?"

Lycoris smiled happily and replied,

"I feel great. It feels really good to be strong and be able to defeat enemies. I-I feel like I am actually making use of my powers at last."

Ryan grinned and replied, "I'm glad.  Since you've learned some spells, I thought it time to use them in combat.  This will help you get ready for the real thing."

He paused for a few moments and then asked, "Do you want to try another situation?"

Lycoris smiled and nodding, she replied,

"Yes, I'd like another situation. This sort of feels like a real battle and I'd like more."

Ryan replied, "Ok, this one is going to be a little more difficult so be ready."

He then cast a spell, summoning a few soldiers this time, equipped with swords and shields.  Most of them were standard fighters but a couple were magic users who could wield light magic.

Then he looked to Lycoris and said, "When you're ready."

Lycoris first used a spell to detect the enemies' locations and felt that they were more than one, so she took a moment to think things over, then cast a spell to produce dark smoke around the enemies, so they couldn't see her attacks, and then cast dark energy balls and cast them towards each soldier.

The soldiers who had no magic were immediately taken down by Lycoris' dark magic attacks.  However, there were a couple of soldiers still standing, having managed to deflect the attacks by producing light magic shields.  Then they produced balls of light magic, aiming them towards Lycoris.

Lycoris could feel the balls of magic coming towards her so she quickly summoned a defensive shield around her to protect her, and waited until the attacks were deflected. Then thinking of another way to defeat the remaining couple of soldiers, she came up with an idea.

Casting a spell, she summoned a dummy of herself in another direction and cast another spell to make her invisible, hoping to mislead the soldiers. Then she summoned a couple of dark energy balls and fired them again towards them.

The remaining soldiers fell for the tricks, aiming their attack spells towards the dummy.  Then they were hit as Lycoris' attacks hit them and all the soldiers were down.  Ryan nodded, very impressed with how Lycoris handled the situation.  Smiling at her, he said,

"Well done, Lycoris.  You used a variety of spells there."

Lycoris was relieved as her idea for battle worked and the enemies were down. Taking her breathes, she smiled and said,

"Thank you, Ryan. I am glad I could pass everything till now. This is good exercise for coming up with solutions in tough situations."

Ryan nodded happily and replied, "Yup, I agree.  It's a good idea to be as prepared as possible and this is good practice for putting those spells to use.  I think what we'll do in our lessons from now on is this.  I'll teach you spells and then you can practice them.  Then we'll have situations where you get to practice using those spells.  What do you think?"

Lycoris nodded eagerly and replied,

"I am totally fine with it. This actually sounds quite well and this is a perfect way to practice the spells I learn and make sure that I make the best use of them."
