Pop star Michael Jackson has died in Los Angeles, aged 50. Paramedics were called to the singer's Beverly Hills home at about midday on Thursday after he stopped breathing. He was pronounced dead two hours later at the UCLA medical centre. Jackson's brother, Jermaine, said he was believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest. Jackson, who had a history of health problems, had been due to stage a series of comeback concerts in the UK, beginning on 13 July. Speaking on behalf of the Jackson family, Jermaine said doctors had tried to resuscitate the star for more than an hour without success.
Jermaine Jackson on his brother's sudden death
He added: "The family request that the media please respect our privacy during this tough time." "And Allah be with you Michael always. I love you." TV footage showed the star's body flown from UCLA to the LA County Coroner's office where a post-mortem is expected to take place on Friday. Concerns were raised last month when four of Jackson's planned comeback concerts were postponed, but organisers insisted the dates had been moved due to the complexity of staging the show. A spokeswoman for The Outside Organisation, which was organising the publicity for the shows, said she had no comment at this time. Broadcaster Paul Gambaccini said: "I always doubted that he would have been able to go through that schedule, those concerts. It seemed to be too much of a demand on the unhealthy body of a 50 year old. "I'm wondering that, as we find out details of his death, if perhaps the stress of preparing for those dates was a factor in his collapse. "It was wishful thinking that at this stage of his life he could be Michael Jackson again." Uri Geller, a close friend of the star, told BBC News it was "very, very sad". Speaking outside New York's historic Apollo theatre, civil rights activist Rev Al Sharpton paid tribute to his friend. "I knew him 35 years. When he had problems he would call me," he said.
Can't believe it. I'm gutted. RIP Michael, thanks for everything you gave us. Tommy, Cardiff
"I feel like he was not treated fairly. I hope history will be more kind to him than some of the contemporary media." Melanie Bromley, west coast bureau chief of Us Weekly magazine, told the BBC the scene in Los Angeles was one of "pandemonium". "At the moment there is a period of disbelief. He was buying a home in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles and the scene outside the house is one of fans, reporters and TV cameras - it's absolute craziness. "I feel this is the biggest celebrity story in a long time and has the potential to be the Princess Diana of popular culture." Forgive me, I've been posting this up everywhere. but it really is a shame that Michael isn't with us anymore. 50 is such a young age to go.. =c I know that many people thought fairly bad of the guy. Admittedly, I did think he went a little too far with surgery. As for everything else- I don't follow the news much, admittedly, but did anyone actually have /proof/ to support the allegations? I've never heard of any.. But he hasn't always been that way, right? You have to admit, his music is amazing. He's one of the rare "older" artists that I actually listen to- I'm not a fan of old music, but I've always loved some of his songs. Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal, Thirller etc. I remember watching his Video "Ghost" alot when I was a child too. My mum always loved the Jacksons, so I grew up listening to alot of his songs. He was a legend in music, and I don't think it's gonna be easy for anyone to out do him- if at all. I feel sorry for his family, wife and kids. It's going to be difficult for them =c (State the obvious, I know >>; ). All his fans too.. Well, I'm never good with what to say at times like these, so forgive me. As many have already said; no one can hurt you anymore. Rest in peace Michael. You'll be missed.

| (Really never heard any? =s He was pretty much known as /the/ pop-king. Ever heard of moon-walking? He pretty much invented it I think.. etc etc. You should listen to some songs. They're pretty old now; he began singing around 1971 (solo, anyway. He was singing as a child, but in a group with his siblings); but theyre good. Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal, Thriller, Beat it, Black or White to name a few goods ones.) | |

| And its not just him. Farah Fawcett, 62, died today as well.
I really love Michael Jackson's songs. One of those I really liked were the songs entitled "Heal the World", "Ben", "Give Love on Christmas Day", "Dangerous" and "Thriller". He surely is a big loss. Condolences to his sons and daughters.
These deaths were all surprising, and Jackson's death overshadowed Farah Fawcett's death too.
EDIT: Michael Jackson's songs were played here repeatedly in almost all AM and FM radio stations here in the Philippines.

| Oh yes, I know about Farah Fawcett. Too bad. I loved Charlie's Angels. And about two weeks, David Carradine died as well. Makes me wonder what is going on. O_O | |

| Hmm, well, I think that Michael Jackson was more of a controversial celebrity than Farrah Fawcett. There weren't a lot of skeletons in her closet compared to Michael, in my opinion.
I remember listening to Michael Jackson's early music and it was good. Back in the '80s at a time when I liked the music and US cartoons totally rocked.

I've never heard of her, really, but it is a bit mean that so much time should be dedicated to Michael and she hasn't really had a look-in.. - Phoenixgirl wrote:

I know I sound, like.. behind and all, but regarding all the allegations against him, was anything even proven? o-o

| Yeah, it is sad how Farah was so ignored. I read earlier on wiki that Ryan O'Neal had proposed to hear short before she dies. The poor guy, must be heart broken now. | |

Well, I don't remember all of the bad news regarding him but I do remember watching on the news some years ago when one of his kids was just a baby and how he was holding him/her over a balcony in Germany (?). That seems a bit disturbing.

| @Phoenix;
Hai, I do agree that was disturbing =s He shouldn't have done that.. the poor child ;A; I admit he did do some rather silly things, and I'm not trying to condone anything of course, but I think over recent years maybe he hasn't been of sound mind. I mean.. I kind of agree with my mother; he may have felt he had no childhood and was trying to.. "regain" it.. though of course the ways in which he acted as a result wasn't good...

| O_O That is truly disturbing. I can't understand why would he do such a thing.
In any case, may he rest in peace. He did make some good music either way. ^^ (I didn't hear any, though. lol)

| Well, his explanation was the fans would like to see the baby, so he showed the baby on the balcony. Pretty scary.
Well, I pity his children. Now that the only parent that they looked up to is gone.

| It is not, I think. He married two ladies and divorced in a really short time. They both said he was a good man but he was weird, too.
I just watched this program on TV which is a tribute to Michael Jackson's life. They brought a video of the baby he held over the balcony. There were really people downstairs and all but man, I think I freaked out at the sight. >_<
And I don't mean any offense but I think he looked really weird at times and somewhat creepy. Sometimes I thought he was a woman but maybe because of his long hair or what. O_O
