@Kini:LOL, malay is almost the same as Indonesian

Well, then let's talk about slank language in Indonesia.
Gw (Gue)= an unformal way to say I, in formal way we used. "Saya" or "Aku"
Loe (Lu)= an unformal way to say you in formal way we used "Anda" or "Kamu"

Now head to Japanese
a litlle Japanese I know
Gomenesai=I'm sorry
Itadakimasu =Thanks for the food
Boku =I usualy used by man
Otoko =Guy
Onna =Girl

PostSubject: Re: Language Thread   Language Thread EmptySat Nov 01, 2008 10:22 am

I just started learning Japanese, so I know a bit as well.
I got a book on kanji, a book on learning Japanese, and a game for the DS which is supposed to teach Japanese as well.

For "I" I use Ore, its a more arrogant form of I, lol.

The thing I'm having a bit of trouble remembering are the days of the week.

nichiyoobi - Sunday
getsuyoobi - Monday

The other days are kayoobi, suiyoobi, mokuyoobi, kinyoobi, and doyoobi. I THINK in that order, I'm going to check. Yrah, that's right. Before I learned what they meant, I couldn't remember them at all, but now I know what they actually mean, I can remember the days, but sometimes I get confused with the order.

nichi = day, sun
getsu = month, moon
ka = fire
sui - water
moku = wood
kin = metal
do = earth

So they have "Sun"day and "Moon"day just like us, but the rest of the days are based on the elements. Which makes it a bit easier, for me at least.

The months are a lot easier, you just add the number of the month to gatsu. So March would be sangatsu, and december juunigatsu.

PostSubject: Re: Language Thread   Language Thread EmptySat Nov 01, 2008 5:51 pm

I know alot of spanish and japanese actually (well only a little of japanese) i wanted the ds japanese game but i cant find it in stores.

but anyway in spanish Tengo means "i have"
Ducharse is i think "to shower"
Afietarse is "to shave"
Pienarse is "to comb your hair"
and Como No means "of course!!"
i know alot more like for instance you have to congigate spanish words, for instance a difficult one

IR= to go
Voy= I go
Vas=you g
Va= he/she go
Vamos= We go
Van= They go
yes they are all the same word and go under IR (pronounced ear)
a easy one is
Empezar= to start/to begin
Empiezo= I begin/ start
Empiezar= You start/begin
Empieza= He/she start/begin
(with an amos word you dont add I before E)Empezamos= we start/begin
Empiezan= they start/begin

yes this is a very complex language indeed, but not as tough as japanese writing

a little mistake was there Wink
And yes, there are a lot of verbs that have a vocal change [like this: e -> ie] in all forms except for 1. person plural [empezamos] and 2. person plural [empezáis]. And the -áis forms for 2. person plural are just in Spain I think; I think Iberoamericans [although I'm not sure if all of the countries] use the -an form for that [and in Spain -an = 3. person pl., or also a very formal form for 2. person pl.]

My mother tongue is Czech.
I have learnt German and English for many years, and also some Latin and French but from that I have forgotten all.
And now I learn Spanish which I love <3 Este idioma me encanta [= I love this language.]

Hi all,

Thank you Kaisuto for starting the thread Smile

I know English, Mandarin (Official Chinese language/dialect), Cantonese (mostly used it Hong Kong and other provinces --depends on the culture), Malay (a.k.a Bahasa Malaysia--our national language), Japanese (Stopped learning since a couple of years ago...Grammar has gone quite off due to lack of practice and usage) and finally, I'm learning Italian from my uni's Italian Language and Culture club.

Here is how to say "Good morning" in the other 5 languages that I know:

Assume the ( ) are silent letters...

Mandarin = Zao An

Cantonese = Zou San

Malay = Selamat Pagi [Sir-la-ma(r)t Pa(r)-ghee)

Japanese = Ohayou gozaimasu [O-ha-yo(u) Go-zai-mas(u) ~~Pronounce "yo" a little longer]

Italian = Bongiourno [Bon-ji-orn-no]---sounds something like this (hard to pronuonce it in "typing"... ^^;

@Yuu
Just to correct some pronounciation...
Quote :
Gomenesai=I'm sorry
The correct "spelling" or pronounciation is "Gomennasai" read as "
"Gomen-na-sai"

@Elie: Gomen na sai!!! >_< I only learn japanese from anime and manga, never learn it in a proper way, But i kinda undestand it even I can't sepak it. hehehe (seems like I'm getting used with it). One word I kinda used to remember since it's kinda useful if someone asking you in Japanese hehehe:

"Gomennasai, watashi wa Nihon-go ga wakarimasen!" (Sorry I don't understand Japanese! x3)

But still I like this language more then english, mandarin and Indonesian hehehe

Now this is all the language I know to say thanks:

Mandarin= xie xie
Indonesia= Terima Kasih (I'm sure Malay does too)
Japanese= Arigatou
Spanish= Gracias (I don't know if I write it properly)

And here's the some way to say I love you=
Indonesian= Aku cinta padamu (Maybe Malay does too)
Japanese= Aishiteru
Mandarin= Wo Ai Ni

I'm reviving this thread... Well I didn't see Phoenixgirl posted this... So I planned to post Korean (Hangul) basic alphabets instead.

Korean is a very special and unique language, so does Japanese. That's why they are considered language isolate.

Vowels:
ㅏ = a
ㅑ = ya
ㅓ = eo
ㅕ = yeo
ㅗ = o

ㅛ = yo
ㅜ = oo or u
ㅠ = yoo or yu
ㅡ = eu
ㅣ = i

Consonants:
ㄱ = g or k
ㄴ = n
ㄷ = d or t
ㄹ = l or r
ㅁ = m

ㅂ = b or p
ㅅ = s
ㅈ = ch
ㅊ = strong ch

ㅋ = g or k
ㅌ = d
ㅍ = p
ㅎ = h

ㅎ (h) + ㅏ (a) + ㄴ (n) = 한 (han)

ㄱ (g) + (u) ㅜ + ㄱ (k) = 국 (guk)

Now you see how special it is? Very Happy

And this is for Mandarin or Hanja for foods! Razz
韓國 (han2 guo2) = (South) Korea
朝鮮 (chao2 xian1) = (North) Korea
中國 (zhong1 guo2) = China
日本 (ri4 ben3) = Japan
筷子 (kuai4 zi) = Chopsticks
泡菜 (pao4 cai4) = Kimchi
壽司 (shou4 si1) = Sushi
點心 (dian3 xin1) = Dimsum
豆腐 (dou4 fu3) = Tofu or beancurd
包 (bao1) = Pau or Chinese bun
麵/面 (mian4) = Noodles
飯 (fan4) = Rice
